    Another mother of fermentation chamber

Two. I have only one so far, but am thinking of getting a second one.

Here are some more pictures of my cooler.

    Another mother of fermentation chamber

Today I tested a cooler that I made close to the mother of fermentation, available online. It worked well - I put three 1/2 gal milk jugs with ice in the evening, and filled a 6.5 gal carboy with the tap water at about 75 degrees. The fan kicked in immediately, and worked all night. In the...

Very slow activity on the second day.

All right, I am doing a single fermentation, and this coming Tuesday it will be two weeks since I brewed this batch. The instruction sheet which came with this Samuel Adams Boston Ale clone says that the final gravity has to be 1.012. Well, today I measured gravity, and after temperature...

    Marking a carboy

Thanks for the great thread! Considering the price and my overall dislike of chemicals, I'll probably use a dremel. I did a few letters on a glass mug today, and it seems to be all right - doesn't go anywhere deep.

    Marking a carboy

Did anybody try to mark a carboy from outside with a dremel and a diamond bit? I would like to make something like a ruler with quarts and gallons marks, but I am not sure how safe it is. I am talking about a 6.5 gallon Italian glass carboy purchased at AHS. Thanks for any ideas!

Thanks everybody for welcoming! I am already lost in this ocean of beer information :-)

    S-shaped vs 3-piece airlock

I meant to say that when the paper is closer to the wall it hangs in a more accurate way and occupies less space in the bathroom.

    S-shaped vs 3-piece airlock

No way! It's just ugly when it goes over. And it takes more space. Aesthetically, going under is the only way to go.

    Making a wort chiller

In Texas the tap water is not that cold even in winter (which rarely lasts for more than a couple weeks anyway), so I decided to go a two stage way. I bought two 20' lengths of 3/8'' copper tubing at the Orange Despot and a 5 gal bucket. Then I took a stripe of 1/8'' iron, welded plates for in...

Hello! I am originally from Russia, and I badly missed bread (I mean real bread) starting with day one on American land. As a result, I had to teach myself how to bake bread. In a couple of years I was able to get the taste and crumb that I wanted. Now, after baking bread for about ten years I...

    S-shaped vs 3-piece airlock

Has anybody compared the bubbling rate of the s-type vs three-piece airlocks? Do they allow the same amount of bubbles per unit of time to escape from the carboy/bucket/whatever? Ideally, one has to use a T-connector and attach both at the same time to compare :-)

Very slow activity on the second day.

I forgot to tell about another minor difference between my two batches: for the first I used an airlock with a plastic insert, while for the second it was a one piece airlock. Can it be that the latter requires more pressure to force the gas through the water? In a two piece design the gas just...

Very slow activity on the second day.

Thanks for a peace of mind! I was really worried this morning... But now I am confused - how can it be that airlock activity is irrelevant? It seems to me that hydrometer and airlock are just two sides of the same coin: yeast consume sugars (density of beer decreases, so the points get lower)...

Very slow activity on the second day.

I tried the search, but didn't find anything related to my question, so I hope some experts will explain to me what is going in in my carboy. Here is the deal. Two days ago, I brewed a batch of the AHS version of Samuel Adams Boston Ale. Half pound of Crystal malt 10L, 6 lbs Extra light pale ale...
