    Secondary Fermentation

Absolutely true. I did about 7 or 8 batches before I used a secondary and it was probably the biggest improvement I ever made to my extract brews.

    apricot wheat beer

I made an extract blueberry wheat, and we are drinking it now. It's pretty good - but I didn't use any specialty grains. I wish I would have - cause it would have brought the sweet side of the blueberries out a little. It's still really good though.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale Clone from BYO

I just racked my all-grain SNPA clone from the northern brewer forum into secondary. It really is spectacular. 87.5% 2-row, 12.5% 60L. Gotta use some magnum bittering hops to get the real effect!

    Listermann's - Cincy - info wanted

sorry for the dumb question, but google isn't helping. What is the green board?

    Listermann's - Cincy - info wanted

Just curious about when Listermann opened the shop on Dana in Cincinnati. Was it just manufacturing to start, or was it always a HBS too? Anyone know what the building was used for before it was Listermann's?

    Want to take the plunge

I was kind of in the same boat a month ago. I wanted to start all-grain but I didn't think I wanted to build anything, fearing it would turn out like crap. I placed an order for one of the systems at Beer, Beer and More Beer and a couple days later decided it was a total ripoff and cancelled the...

    T-Minus 2 hours

I did my second AG on Saturday and also used too much strike water to begin with. It was more like soup, so I ran off a gallon and kept it aside to be added to the sparge. In hindsight, I think the best thing I could have done would have been to siphon the extra water off the top and discard it...

What are ya fermenting it with?

First AG last night - went pretty good!!

You speak the truth. I have spent the last year doing extract beers practically every weekend... Once I got some consistency going, and quit worrying so much about sanitation (as in - I knew what I needed to do correctly without stressing about it) I then decided to try all-grain. Also got...

First AG last night - went pretty good!!

I'd like to, but I don't know if I can. The spigot came on the kettle, and is non-removable. I could not even fit a 1/2" OD hose inside the hole. Maybe if I get really creative I can come up with something... that would be nice. Look at the pic and let me know if you have any ideas...

First AG last night - went pretty good!!

Hey ya'll... just wanted to share my experience last night - did my first all-grain batch. It was a blast, every step of the way, and I really think the beer is gonna come out great. Well, REALLY GOOD at least... :p Use a 5 gal cooler w/a mini-keg bung and a stainless screen. The mashtun cost...

    Racking consensus

I was listening to Basic Brewing Radio and it was mentioned the lagers really suffer from off-tastes if they sit on the yeast and trub any extra time whatsoever. Is that generally true?

    Fruit flavored extract beer

I just bottled my blueberry wheat a few days ago. I took a taste and almost died (the good kind of "almost died"). I even poured out some more cause it was so good. Nice color, "strong" hint of blueberry, and even a little bit of tannin on the finish... not offensive at all. I cannot wait for it...

    How do you sparge

I'm getting ready to start all grain but I'm still on the fly vs. batch fence. Can someone clear up the whole "recirculation of wort" deal? Is this just running the first runnings back through the grain bed to filter out cloudiness? Why does it become cloudy in the first place? Thanks a...

    Oxyclean Free

Yeah, plain water doesn't do anything for me. Maybe it's a difference in the local water supply. But if I don't use something, those labels aren't goin' anywhere.

    big barley wine

yep - I hear ya. My barleywine fermentation has been a show! Only about 8 hours after I pitched the yeast, the Krausen was about an inch from the top. I didn't have a 1" blow-off tube, so I had to use what I had... I stuck one of those rubber two-hole caps on there and attached a siphon hose...

    Oxyclean Free

What are your all's thoughts on Oxyclean Free? This is the oxyclean that has no chlorine, dyes, or perfumes. I bought some to try on beer labels and it worked like magic... after an hour of soaking labels were floating on the top of the water! And also, after a quick rinse, there is absolutely...

    big barley wine

I'm doing my first Barleywine today, an extract kit from Listermann. 1 lb 60L .5 lb caramunich 12 pounds of canadian light LME 3 oz Nugget (60m) 2 oz Cascade (15m) 1 oz Centennial (dry) Planning on letting it sit in a 5 gal secondary for 4 weeks minimum... should I let it go longer...

Burners, burners and more burners.... Yikes!

I'd be very curious to find out the quality of the SS pots that come with these kits. Home Depot sells one for $99 that would be a really good deal if that pot was pretty sturdy and had a thicker bottom. Something tells me they are of the flimsiest SS you can get, sides AND bottom, but I'd love...

    Third-y-ary Fermentor?

ok, stupid title. But here's my question... After primary fermentation, I racked some wheat beer over about 3 pounds of wild blueberries. I plan on letting that stay put for 14 days total. After that, would there be any advantage to racking the beer off the berries into a third carboy and...
