Oxiclean on Stainless I DARE you to prove me wrong

I've found oxiclean to be an amazing cleaner even when not using as much as recommended. I bearly use a table spoon for 5 gallons of water and have great results soaking everything. The only time I actually use a full scoop is when filling the rubbermaid container I clean bottles in.

    CO2 Dilemma

OK, that makes things easier. I have just been keeping the 5# to the side and have only used the 15#. I remember reading somewhere that a 5# was good for 5 kegs but didn't specify if that included force carbing.

    CO2 Dilemma

It's sunday and I was planning to fill 2 kegs to force carbonate for a trip next week. I have 2 bottles, a 5# and 15#. The 15# is about to be empty, the 5# has only been used to dispense 2 kegs. I was planning on bringing the 5# on the trip to dispense the beer and don't want to use it to...

    Ferment in my fridge?

I tryed a fridge without a temp controller for my first lager. Was unable to hold temps properly and I got a nice buttery popcorn oktoberfest even with a diacetyl rest. IMO if you are going to put in the time for a lager, $70 for a temp controller is well worth the investment.

    Decant or not??

I recently read an article written by Jamil in one of the brewing magazines stating to decant then add wort to the starter a few hours before pitching. Then pitch the whole starter. I followed his method with a lager and had airlock activity within 2 hours of pitching.

How many batches per propane tank?

I'd have to say I get about 3 batches per tank. SQ14 runs constantly on brew day between heating water and boil. A spare tank is a must.

    Sam Adams Summer Ale **barf**

I would have to agree. Just had 2 at the bar and was regretting not going for a bass. Still better then shocktop or BMC on tap I guess. Disappointing...

90 minute boil in a 7.5 gallon pot

Actaully I think a better way would be to use a smaller pot on the side On the burner in the kitchen and get both boiling then combine when the larger pot has room.

upgrading from 5gal to 1/2 bbl

I've done 1 15gal batch with my 25 gal pot and found that it greatly increases the chance of boil over, I initailly got a pot that big so I wouldn't have to baby sit the boil anymore.... but of course I had to try and max it out to see what would happen. I used an SQ-14 to boil, it took a...

    damn starters

I've had starters take up to 3 days to get going. To check for activity I look for the foil to slightly inflate when I shake it. I've also poored off a small amount and tasted to see if it is more like wort or more like beer to figure out whats going on.

    When to pitch starter

I would recommend pitching the starter as soon as the wort cools. Decanting will not make any difference. Just plan ahead for next brew day if you'd like to decant. IMO it is better to get the yeast to the wort and minimize anything else infecting it.

    Wyeast 1056 - Harvest - Then?

My washed yeast has probably been in the fridge for 2-3 months, which might have something to do with it. However it's probably better to pitch more then not enough. I'd recommend a starter.

    Wyeast 1056 - Harvest - Then?

I'd recommend making the starter a day or two early then normal. I've had a few jars of washed yeast that took an extra day to get going. I usually make starters on weds to brew on sunday and have underpitched because of this. I'm still new to the proccess and working out the kinks...

    Where to buy poppet valves?

Replaced all my O-rings and used keg lube. Now it seems I keep finding poppet valves leaking. I have 4 used kegs and figure I should just change all of them. My LHBS wants 6 dollars a piece for poppets. I wouldn't mind buying a dozen just to keep some in stock. Anybody know of a place online...

    Bottling was easier...

Finally got back on the internet. I have replaced all the o-rings and have put a coating of keg lube on all of them. We'll just have to wait and see what happens. Trust me, I considered using the chest freezer, but their was a voice in the back of my head that just said "NO". Having beer on...

    Bottling was easier...

Summer is coming and I decided to compliment the smoker and grill with beer on tap. After seeing Beirmunchiers converted garbage can I thought something similar would be the ticket. I was not interested in modifying the chest freezer (I bought it to ferment in). Purchased a stainless 2 tap...

    Broken Thermometer

I only use my lab thermometers for the mash and to check when the wort is getting close to boil. Otherwise I use an infared themometer to check temps for everything else (measures surface temp so keep that in mind). If I'm feeling lazy, I'll just touch the side of the kettle and feel how hot it is.
