Yeast Starter is 10% of wort volume

I made a 2 liter starter last night at 11pm. By the time I pitched at 4:45 pm there was a nice yeast cake at the bottom. Decanted a little more than half, swirled it around to resuspend the yeast and yeast cake, pitched and aerated...we'll see how it goes!

Yeast Starter is 10% of wort volume

Hi all! Soooo, this will be my first yeast starter and I had read that a warm starter that was greater than 5% of the wort volume required extra prep...but it sounds almost like cold crashing for a bit to bring it close to wort temp then decanting most of liquid, swirl it around and pitch the...

    Thinking about All Grain

This is what I do for the same reason. Plus my counterflow wort chiller runs off garden hose water and the hot water discharge wouldnt have anywhere to run off. Just makes it easier and more of a care free day.

    1st Year Hop Experience

I totally understand the haphazardness. I try to make it as simple as possible and focus on cleaning and sanitizing. Once you get a couple AG batches under your belt and get comfortable with the process, it feels less haphazard. I totally get it though, I've been out of the brewing game for a...

    Blonde Ale/Pseudo Lager Yeast Suggestions?

Well, I pulled the trigger on a pack of Omega Lutra...was reading up on the yeast and figured it would be a cheap experiment! Slightly revised recipe...pulled out the carapils and bumped up the 2 row Pilsner and Aromatic malts. 8.5 lbs 2 Row Pilsner 0.5 lbs Aromatic Malt 0.4 oz Saaz (whole...

    How to Grow Hops

@MIWI - As far as the specific hop to grow, pick something that you'll use. I've got some 3rd year plants (Chinook and Wye Challanger) and some 1st year plants (Centenial and Sterling). I went with mostly high AA hops since it would take less/be more efficient for hop rates. Another thing I...

Hi there from Grand Rapids, Michigan!

That sounds like a fantastic trip! Tried to talk my girlfriend into hiking & camping the North and South Manitou Islands...but that was a no go when she found out the campsites were "rustic". 🤣

Hi there from Grand Rapids, Michigan!

@dawn_kiebawls if you're up for a bit more of a road trip a couple more hours north, you should check out the JP facility in Traverse City. The view of West Bay from their outdoor seating area is great plus you can check out Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lake Shore...not that im trying to steer...

Best way to vacuum seal homegrown hops?

@rwing7486 I use the FM2000-15 model and it's worked fantastic. A few weeks ago I pulled out some Cascade and Magnum hops that were packed in food saver bags for a just shy of 2 years and they smelled fine before they were tossed in and they still taste great in the finished beer. They maybe a...
