BeerSmith 3: Here it comes. Thoughts?

If you purchased BS2 recently, you get the gold subscription free for one year. This means you can install BS3 and use it for a year without additional cost, but after a year you will need to either renew the gold subscription or buy the standalone version. I bought mine recently, so I was...

BeerSmith 3: Here it comes. Thoughts?

I played with it and saw the same. Did you ever figure out why BS3 and Brunwater are so different?

    Occasional bigger batch....

Another thing to consider for your kettle size is boil off rate. I boil off about a half a gallon per hour, and can handle up to about 12 lbs of grain in my 8 gallon kettle. You can also look into 30 minute boils. I only boil a full hour if required by my hop schedule or if I’m using Pilsner malt.

BeerSmith 3: Here it comes. Thoughts?

I’m with you on that. Over 20 years in software and consulting and I still don’t always trust technology!

    Kölsch Black kolsch, Czech Mate

This looks delicious, I too am a fan of Santo. I’ve thought of doing something similar with Pilsner and Carafa. Thanks for sharing!

BeerSmith 3: Here it comes. Thoughts?

I too work in software. I'll have to get Marketing to follow up with you on that.

BeerSmith 3: Here it comes. Thoughts?

I agree with something like Beersmith, paying for a subscription supports a valued member of the homebrewing community. My opinion is different when it comes to paying an annual fee the same as the old standalone fee to upgrade Quicken...

BeerSmith 3: Here it comes. Thoughts?

I'm excited, I purchased Beersmith 2 just a few months ago, so I get the free gold access for a year. If I like it, I'll continue or buy the stand-alone version, if not I've got the older version. I agree with folks that aren't crazy about the subscription model, but I hate to break it to...

Portable Vacuum Sealer Bags Losing Seal? (Hops)

Mine are like that, except the outside is brown paper instead of black. I had no idea there are hand pumps, I just squeezed a bunch. I learned something new today!

Portable Vacuum Sealer Bags Losing Seal? (Hops)

I’ve used the foil lined coffee bags from Amazon, they’ve worked well.

    Are SMaSH recipes worth it?

I build the recipe without looking at the style much, then see what style it fits out of curiosity. When I’ve done them I’m more concerned with OG, IBU, and color.

    German Leichtbier Otto's Mustache

It’s too tasty not to share! I was going for simplicity, and I’ve been working through a pound bag of these. Make sure the alpha acid content works out, I’ve noticed saaz can vary a lot.

    Are SMaSH recipes worth it?

Like Miraculix said, Vienna and Maris Otter are your friends for a SMASH. I’ve done a lager with Vienna and saaz, and pale ales with a US Pale Ale malt (similar to MO) and Sorachi Ace. They made me wonder why I would mess with complicated recipes for simple lagers and pale ales. Before this fall...

Best storage solution for 5 gal batches

Like other’s said, watch Craigslist for keg kits, or shop kegconnection.com if and when you want to buy a new kit. For bottles, ask around if there are homebrewers around you. I’m sure one of them that has started kegging has a bunch of extra bottles to give away. Or stop by a glass recycling bin.

Diacetyl Rest?... But Krausen has dropped

You’re probably fine. It’s probably mostly done, but I had the same thing happen on my last finished beer and can’t taste any diacetyl in the finished beer. Who knows, there may have not been much to begin with. And 65 is a good temp.

How I fixed my broken picnic tap

I searched and searched and didn't see anything posted on how to fix your picnic tap if the handle breaks off. Last night I was pouring myself a glass of beer when, POP, the picnic tap handle snapped off, specifically one of the little tabs on the inside of the handle broke. To fix it, I...

American IPA Sannyasin Swill- West Coast IPA

Didn’t the rajneeshi put haldol in the beer to calm down the homeless people they imported to vote? Beer looks great without it!

    Czech Pale Lager Vienna Saazage

UK summer is awesome. I went to London once in June, temps where what I am used to in October or November, and it didn’t get dark until 11! I’ll keep our winters, though.
