Effect of Keg Headspace on Carbonation

I'm considering using sugar/DME to prime in the corny keg on a batch of brown ale that's close to being ready. I've never done this before - I've always just carbed the keg with CO2. I know that the general rule is to use less priming sugar in a keg than you would for bottling (despite some...

Mini Mash System for Extract Brewers

Hey debtman, here's a post of mine from several pages back in this thread. This setup was extremely simple to assemble and required no tools:

    Effc/Water question

So what are the recommended water-to-grain ratios for mash and sparge?

    Effc/Water question

I'm confused about water amounts here. I thought the ProMash default and the generally accepted water amounts were 1 qt per lb of grain for the mash and 1.3 qt per lb for the sparge. With your grain bill of 10.25 lbs those numbers would only call for 2.6 gal of mash and 3.3 gal of sparge...

    Superbrau LME

I'm trying to duplicate a recipe that calls for some Superbrau light LME and I've been unable to find a place that sells it. Does anybody know of any place that offers this or a suitable replacement for it? Thanks, SP

    Head retention and carbonation technique

So a couple months ago I brewed a stout. I don't have a nitrogen tank so when it came time to keg I decided to use CO2. Until now, every time I've kegged, I've done it the "fast" way of setting to 30psi, shaking and waiting overnight. This time I decided to carbonate the "slow" way by...

    Brewing a better Beer

Certainly boiling the grains and the length of the boil will be contributing factors to less than ideal flavors. But if the biggest complaint is a yeasty flavor, then I would think you be mostly concerned with post-boil practices. Like the type of yeast, length of primary & secondary...

Mini Mash System for Extract Brewers

I just completed my PM setup a couple months ago. I tried to consider the fact that I might one day desire to upgrade to AG and chose equipment that I'll still be able to use in the future with AG. 5 gal Igloo cooler - $20 (WalMart) Bulkhead fitting for cooler - $10.95 (hoptech.com)...

    Fat Tire in WI/IL

I tried Fat Tire for the first time a few months ago at the airport in Houston. Having never really heard of it before that I didn't really know what to expect. When I tried it, it tasted like its name. It had a strange sour bite to it that I've never tasted before. I assumed that this was...

US 2-row vs. US pale malt?

I've noticed that a lot of the recipes in Clone Brews call for "US 2-row pale malt" as the base. But I see most suppliers list both 1) US 2-row and 2) US pale malt. What's the difference between these two and which one is Clone Brews referring to? Thanks, SP

    Missed OG...again

I've checked my hydrometer in plain water and it reads 1.000. But I wonder if it's possible for it to be off. If I wanted to take another "calibration" reading by boiling up a samll amount of DME, is there a way to calculate the gravity if I use x amount of water and y amount of DME?

    Missed OG...again

I've been known to do stuff like that before, but not this time. I topped off to 5 gal and then took gravity reading. Maybe I looked at the wrong scale or something but I would think my number would be much different. I don't know. SP

    Missed OG...again

I'm just about ready to follow Janx's advice and throw away my hydrometer. I have yet to hit any OG targets. Although my latest result was off in the opposite direction of all my others...it was way high. After performing several mini mashes by heating the grain on the stove and sparging...

    More Sparge Questions

I wish I'd found this write up on hbd.org sooner. The more I read it the more questions it answers. Here's the batch sparge step-by-step. It's intended for a 10-gal all-grain with 19lbs of grain so the numbers will vary but the process should be similar: 1.) Mash in with 6 gal. of water...

    More Sparge Questions

I may have just answered my own question on the batch sparge part. Just found this on hbd.org: "After conversion, the sweet wort is recirculated as normal and the mashtun is completely drained as quickly as possible, and an addition of sparge water is added. This is stirred into the mash...

    More Sparge Questions

So far I've done all of my mini-mashes by heating the grain and water on the stove and then pouring through a strainer into the brew kettle. Then I would slowly pour my sparge water over the grains in the strainer. To improve my setup a bit I have put together a more advanced mash tun using a...

    partial grain practical question

Unless a significant portion of the grain you used was 2-row base malt then you did a steep. Even if you did have a good % of 2-row, if you didn't sparge (rinse the grain and collect the runnoff), then you would not have gotten a very effective mash. Yes you can use a grain bag, and no, you...

    Two-temp partial mash?

That sounds about like what I'm trying to get to. About as close to AG as I can get with my current equipment but still have a volume small enough to boil on the stove.

    Two-temp partial mash?

I've been looking at some of the options available as a cheap mash/lauter tun. I saw a 3-gal Igloo for $10 but was concerned it might be too small. Are you unable to keep enough water over the grain bed because you can't control the outflow? i.e. did you replace the tap with a valve...
