    Oaked Arrogant Bastard

Two hearted ale goes fast around my house, sadly my wife drinks most of it before I get any :( I picked up some of the oaked arrogant bastard the other day and it's good, but I think I like the regular arrogant bastard better, and at $15 for a 6 pack, the oaked is a tad bit pricey there...

Buying 33lbs of malt extract, any ideas on hops to get and some steeping grains?

I get my LME here, $44.95 for 33 lbs, $10 credit on shipping for first order: http://www.brewbyyou.com/easysearch/Malt%20Extract%20Liquid.htm Get some crystal grains and some cascade hops and you're all set for several batches of pale ale pretty cheap. If you can't use 33 lbs within a few...

    dry hopping

I've dry hopped my first beer, a pale ale, by tossing some pellets into the carboy. After 2 days, I now seem to have a few mm of oil sitting on top of my beer. I assume this is normal since the whole point is to extract the oils and aromas from the hops, but I'm not sure what to do with it. When...

What commercial beers are in your 'fridge?

Arrogant Bastard is mighty good, I too prefer it over most IPA's. Although for IPA's lately I've been sticking with Bell's Two Hearted Ale and Three Floyd's Alpha King, both really good without being majorly bitter or overdone. I think I'm also in a minority in that the celebration ale didn't...

reusing yeast cake, more than once?

Yeah, I figure I should save some and clean the bucket, it's a bit messy now :) I wasn't worried about off flavors since the first two batches were similar. Since the 3rd batch will be a high strength porter, I'm not really worried about it there either.

reusing yeast cake, more than once?

I did the caramel cream ale and then pitched a pale ale onto the yeast cake from that, no problems so far. Now, I'm ready to do a porter, can I reuse the yeast cake again? The yeast has had beer sitting on it for 3 weeks now, is that pushing it? Should I toss it and get some fresh yeast, or can...

    2 Beers from one mash

Try to find some anchor beers to get an idea, they make their Small Beer from the second runnings of their Old Foghorn barleywine.

    Growing my own hops.

I'm planning on trying next year. We have a trellis that's about 10' high, currently we grow grape vines on it but there is some open room for hops. Only thing I'm not sure about is that it's only about 10' high and most hops seem to like to grow around 20'. Will a 10' height work out ok?

    goose island.

It was April 29th this year, they haven't announced a date for next year yet.

    goose island.

Good enough that the wife and I are contemplating the 6 hour drive to visit for the next dark lord day :) The Alpha King pale ale is really really really good. Granted I've only had a few, since every time I bring it home my wife drinks it up and I'm lucky to get a bottle... If you like...

    goose island.

I've never had the 6 pack variety pack, so I can't comment there :) All I know is that I've tried all the goose island beers we can get here (oatmeal stout, honker's ale, 312, etc) and they've been better than anything I've had from SA (excluding my favorite SA, the Chocolate Bock). They've...

    goose island.

Goose Island, on the whole, is a step up from sam adams. Not to bash SA, they are decent for a larger micro, but there are a lot better beers out there :) Goose Island isn't quite up there with the best, but they're pretty darn good beers. It's a staple purchase for lower priced micros I buy...

    Mmmm...Miller... (Seriously)

Hmmm, can't find it around here, apparently they only released it in a few midwest cities...

    Where can I buy LME?

I'm in the minority of people who prefer LME, but that's mostly because it's significantly cheaper :) I just buy enough in bulk to make 2-3 batches at a time and it works out fine. DME has the advantage of a longer shelf life, but costs a fair bit more. I haven't found either significantly...

    How long does extract last?

It depends on the type of extract. If it's a year old, DME or LME that's packed in the original sealed can (i.e. muntons 3.3 lb cans or such) are fine. If it's bulk LME (i.e. the kit packed the LME from a bulk container into a milk jug or other non original container), toss it.

Made My Very First Neer-Beer Last Night...

I saw that article a while back, I've been contemplating it for a while since my sister is on medication that precludes any alcohol. Glad to know it works :)

    Backyard classics turkey fryer

Last time I used it I made spaghetti for 60 people :) I don't know exactly how much water I had in it, but it was mostly full so I'd estimate at least 5 gallons. I had a rolling boil in less than 10 minutes. I was pretty sure it was a 55k BTU burner, but if everyone else takes 30 minutes to...

    malting your own grain?

It doesn't really take any special equipment to malt your own grain, most people who brew gluten free beer do it since you can't buy commercial malted gluten free grains. This page described the process, not for wheat, but the process is the same.

    "Solventy" smell - ruined batch???

I don't think it's a good thing to know what paint thinner tastes like :)
