Anyone add Oak woodchip or Extract?

I've been thinking about it for a stout I have coming up... not a full barrel, just enough chips to imitate a barrel aged taste.. there are 2 good articles over at BYO about it: http://byo.com/mrwizard/939.html http://byo.com/mrwizard/913.html

    Christmas time is near...

has anyone else brewed Affligem Noel? I got a OG of 1.095 and some major blow off.. I've left it in the primary for about a week and a half and it got down to 1.024, transfered it over to the secondary where its been for about 3 weeks now and still chuging along (a bubble evey 10 min or so)...

great yeast article - READ IT unless you like crappy beer

That was a really good read, some nice recipe's on the site too! I think its to the old ones because the volume of the packs he talks about is only 50ml... instead of the 125ml XL smack packs that I've seen.

Since it seems to be IPA season...

Hah, yeah the hop schedule is a bit over the top, but I just divide everything up before hand into small bags so I can go on autopilot and the measuring doesnt get in the way of my drinking. I'm not looking for something too malty as I tend to like the lighter, more citrusy IPAs. But...

    Auto Siphon Broken?

Its not exactly clear to me... are you talking about the hole the beer/wort flows through & into the tube when you press downt the racking cane portion? Sorry its really blurry and reflective, try it out on a jug of water.. you'll find out real quick if its still working.

Since it seems to be IPA season...

It looks like from the posts today I'm not the only one setting up to brew an IPA soon. This was taken (and heavily modified to fit the LHBS stock) from a DFH 60 min recipe i saw somewhere. I'm debating on running back there and adding a little crystal... Let me know what you think! 60...

    Gluten Free Recipe Books

I know Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee has a gluton free beer, I buy it for my girlfriends mom (I mean SWMBO's mom) when we go visit her in NYC. Its brewed with Rice extract and sorghum. It actually tastes like a good Miller which im sure you could add some fruit to it when you're fermenting...

    My second brew..

when you took the reading did you mix the wort / top off water together well? If not most of wort just sinks to the bottom and you dont get an accurate sample. It happened to me once when I just poured the top off water in and took the hydro reading, i got 1.03. Even though it should have...

    Newbie here...

before you read too much, I find the best way to learn is just jump in and do a simple batch from a kit. If you mess it up (which seems hard to do) you're not out much at all. at least thats what I did after browsing the beginner/intermediate sections of the "Dummies" and "Joy of.." It was...
