    Coffin vs. Keezer temp.

you can also rig a hose to the fan that blows air up into the coffin box, such that it draws air from the bottom of the keezer where it's colder rather than from the slightly warmer top. I get a bit of foam (2 inches) on my first pour of the day and then it runs fine the rest of the time. But...

Freezer to fridge conversion, where to put temp probe?

why would the big mass be less than stable? it'll be more set than the glass of water would be. How long are you storing the meat, and why aren't you freezing it?

60+ hours since yeast pitch and nary a bubble

my understanding is that strictly speaking the lacto did not ferment the wort, I haven't rolled back to the start to see what lacto you pitched, but I know there was an issue with white labs brett cultures containing sacc yeast in the brett packages (kind of like chocolate made in a factory that...

60+ hours since yeast pitch and nary a bubble

I've brewed lots at 76 and never had any issues with viability of yeast- but tons of issues with off flavors due to high temp. Now I brew at 67 and life is grand. Unless I'm using a saison yeast - i use the wyeast french saison- then i intentionally leave it at 76 and it comes out great. saison...

    I need a 12 volt usb charger

the 12v charger isn't the number you're looking for, it's the amps of the charger. 1.5a power output will spin the fan slower than a 3.1a power charger. (think iphone charger vs ipad charger). 12v is the same for both. Amazon sells multi chargers that are for 3.2 amp outputs pretty cheap. I'd...

Freezer to fridge conversion, where to put temp probe?

thermal mass will help stabilize things the best, but I also would place the probe in a container of water to keep the cycling down. The bigger the bucket the more stable the temp. I use a 2 qt mason jar. Air temperature is too variable to try to keep within a few degrees.

    How to keep it cheap?

seconds to reusing the yeast, especially when you get down to about three or four main yeasts you stick with. Most of my beer is on the lighter side with an OG of 1.056 or less. I spend about $25 on grain for a 12-14 lb grain bill and I stick with three or four different hops as well, I'll buy...

    Angry orchard clone

I think my super simple recipe comes pretty close to a redds, angry orchard has a little more acidic bite, so I've added an oz. of lactic acid to the keg if I want it a little crisper. 6 gal Motts 100% apple juice (basic kind not the organic type) wyeast American Ale II ferment 7-14 days at...

    Chest freezer temperature variance

I get it. How do you account for several different fermenters in different stages of fermentation- or do you just prioritize the one that is in the active early phase? just when I thought I was doing something right....:( I'm heading to my lhbs in a few min to pick up this weekends grains...

    Chest freezer temperature variance

i popped a hole in the top of a two quart mason jar lid. stuck the probe in and filled it with water. Is a thermowell more advanced than that, or is that pretty much the idea?

    Kegerator issue

the ice on the plate is a good sign. sounds like the fan or compressor motor is stuck. can you get to the back of it? once you remove the safety kick plate, check that the fan is cooling the coils. unfortunately not much repairability on kegerators. I lost the freon in a beverage air kegerator I...

first post, first all grain - Passion Fruit IPA

since we're somewhat getting close to Thanskgiving, a common and cheap entry into all grain are the turkey fryer and burner combos at walmart that pop up on sale for around $50. For this you get a kettle big enough to do a 5 gal all grain batch (i'm a BIAB fan myself) and a burner that'll get...

    Wilserbrewer and Brew Bag comparison

i run my grains through the mill at my lhbs twice. I've no idea what it's set for a gap. but it does look like husk parts and flour when i'm done. The wilser bag is fine enough that I don't have any issues I've noticed with the sensor. Only time i've ever gotten an e4 code with the m&b was when...

Witbier Hoegaarden Witbier Clone - Pierre Celis White

Looking forward to brewing this in a few days. Would love a couple of questions answered if anyone's got a second. 1. it was asked but i never saw it answered- for BIAB are the rice hulls necessary? It would seem no to me, but I don't need to leave it out if it does something other than help...

    Jockey Box Alternative?

how about cutting a corny sized hole in the top of one of those yellow igloo water dispensers? I know i've seen it done on here before. then you can essentially have a well insulated garbage can with a picnic tap that will hold ice for a few days. They only run about $30 at walmart. top of...
