Using Yeast from the Last Batch

Short answer - yes you can pitch directly onto the yeast cake, and it will make beer (and very quickly !).. I think, though, you are better off washing/rinsing the yeast and pitching a portion of what you get ... some people swear by just pitching on the entire cake. I remember the first...

    Food grade buckets?

Yes - excellent point...both the HLT and MLT I use are Rubbermaid 10G coolers...better check that spec .. call the 800 #... OH - and what about the brass fittings inside for the SS kettlescreen inside the MLT -- better check that one (smile) but who would I call?

BYO Recipe Efficiency 65% vs. Your Efficiency

Not sure - I was getting in the mid to upper 60's about 3 months ago ... I am using a new local Pale malt and I figure I will go through that and see if new grain changes eff... Perhaps it doesn't have the diastatic power as other grains (?) I do know the crush could be finer, but 2 yr old...

    Food grade buckets?

I use Homer Buckets to store the grain...Everything else (buckets, pots, fermenters is food grade.. OK - I guess I found out the h buckets are not "food Grade", but its not like I am actually consuming the grain, and they keep out the hungry mice. Call me cheap.

BYO Recipe Efficiency 65% vs. Your Efficiency

I think I am lucky to be getting 56-59% consistently. I use ProMash so I sim7ply adjust the grain bill to achieve the expected gravity, with 57sk as the efficiency It works pretty well.

Problems between pasteurization and adding yeast for my cider

We tried the same thing last yearcwith 10G of wonderful freshly-pressed VT cider...we pasturized, but planned to pitch the next day ...too late, I thought, bec something else was fermenting in the basement ...I thought the worst, but stuck with the plan. Long story short, I pitched a starter...

    Yeast harvested.

My vote is h=just do the starter if it is 2 weeks old ...you have plenty of good looking yeast -- let's make sure they have their game on.

    Brewing in Basement

I agree ! I do my mashing in the basement with electric to heat the water, then transport the runnings to the BK on the porch. All propane is fired outside. I simply do not think it is worth the risk to me or my family to allow any CO into the house..even with a CO detector...suppose the alarm...

Reusing Yeast from CARBOY (How Long)

Yeast washing is worthwhile ... I have some 6 month old WLP001 that took off in the starter, and later in the mild ale. The beer was excellent...the yeast book says 6 months in the fridge, but it is probably more - as long as you do a starter to prove viability. This weekend I will be doing a...
