    I stop at 3-4 ... but each batch, washed, yields 2-3 pint mason jars for the next starter, so I start to lose track ... and that's when I break down and fork over $7 for a fresh vial ! I do it mostly for the convenience.

    YES= I mash in the basement, and it took me several batches to figure out that I needed 180 deg approx to start if I wanted to have any shot at hitting 153 - 156 with 10lbs of grain...the thermal mass of both the cooler and the grain have a definite effect..once I am dialed in, the rubbermaid...

    heating the fermentor?

    The pump is to circulate the water ?? I don't think you need it...the bucket is remarkably even in temp - that is what the aquarium heaters do... YMMV, but try to keep it simple

    Why Electric? Confused

    The quiet is a big relief .. 2 advantages of electric are the quiet, and automation...water is hot when I wake up I mash in the basement with electric, usually very early on the weekend. I don't bother anyone. boil on the porch with propane, outside..I need to get a good ventilation system...
