Preparing for Brew Day from Washed Yeast

+1 on MrMalty the amount of slurry is important, of course, and its age..feed this data to MrMalty, and he will reveal the answer...try to get the yeast to room temp (65-70) on brewing day..temp shock is something to avoid If less than a week or so, and you have enough slurry for the size...

100 ML slurry too big for 1.6L starter ?

Yes - this is true. I will be making a garden-variety pale ale, OG = approx 1.050...MR malty is my friend, and I will visit. I was curious because a single vial of White Labs is about half of what I have harvested...but I am sure nothing will be 'ruined' if I pitch a tad bit more yeast..

100 ML slurry too big for 1.6L starter ?

Wondering about pitching rate for a 1600 ml starter... I have about 100ml of clean us-05 slurry, 2nd generation (it was harvested from a primary of a 1.045 ale about 3 weeks ago)... Should I use it all in the starter, or maybe cut it in half..or maybe I am getting too anal about the yeast :)

How long do you store washed yeast?

Just found some WLP001 from Jan 1 ... going to make a starter which I am sure will prove once again how viable this yeast is. I have some 550 which has been there since November -- maybe I will cough up the $7 for a new vial, and start the washing over again..

How long will cracked grains stay good?

This is an "issue" I am always forgetting about - ie the grain temp...I mash in the basement, but I pre-heat the mash tun, but the crushed grain has been sitting in the cold basement, which sucks the heat out of the strike water more than I expect...I suppose I cld store upstaris overnight ...
