I usually buy 3-4 lbs of hops and just try to get as much air out of them and seal them back up. I buy from Yakima valley and the come in Mylar ziplock bags. Seems to work fine with me as long as you get as much air out as you can.

What is the point of doing it? I can't imagine how much it would cost and the fact there is no benefit over the glass laboratory set you can buy for like $50. I like making my own stuff too, but this one seems a little out there.

Blackprinz malt is another good one for adding color without astringency.

Not sure what size your boil kettle is, but when I whirlpool I put a paint strainer bag over the top of my kettle. I use a 9.2 gallon Stout Kettles brew pot, and there is plenty of room to go bigger on kettle size. Keeps the bugs out and things flying in the air out.

I tap with the handle of a screw driver and if that doesn't work, I sanitize a straightened metal coat hanger and use it to poke a whole in the trub and the burst of air/ beer filling the collection ball cleans off the sides.
