    Advice on home grown hops

A friend of mine just texted me and said something along the lines of "Hey I'm visiting my sister and they have some hops growing on their land, but they're not using them. Do you want any?" To which I said absolutely yes, grab as much as you possibly can! But then I asked what kind of hop...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Ginger Ale

I made this beer and I was hoping to have it available for when my in laws were in town. I ended up lifting the keg and realized I needed to stop drinking it! I think it's delicious but I went with two lemons and next time I'd stick to one. The extra lemon masks some of the ginger that I wanted.

    Fermenting too hot

My SWMBO has been against a chest freezer but I am pretty sure I'll land one after this. I've been trying to find how I can get a really good deal but they get scooped up pretty quick on Craigslist. I used US05 so I wasn't expecting much off flavors. It does taste and smell like fusel. I even...

    Fermenting too hot

Ok @snow16. Will try...what seems odd to me is that it looks clean and attenuated and it tastes pretty similar to my last batch but I do think I've got some fusel alcohols in there or something strange. I know it sounds crazy to try to keg so soon (I usually wait at least 2-3 weeks), but this is...

    Fermenting too hot

I've never used a pre chiller before. What could I do to get it that low? I've struggled getting below 80 honestly, and I experimented with not using any cooling at all (just cover with sanitized tin foil) and that worked decent actually. It took a day or two but I saved a lot of water and got...

    Fermenting too hot

It's only been in the primary about 9 days but last time I brewed this I kegged it after 10 days and it was fantastic. Clear and clean. Do you guys think I can get by leaving it in the primary another week or two?

    Fermenting too hot

So I have a Firestone walker 805 clone I brewed once that was really tasty but definitely not a clone (attenuated higher and resulted in a drier beer). Based on the success I wanted to try it again. I've been brewing about 9 months now and noticed that my best beers came in the colder winter...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Ginger Ale

Actually the 3lb of honey I got was good honey but cheaper than local honey. I think 3 lb was like $25 which is still expensive but I believe the local stuff is $10-12 per lb. I ended up kegging this a couple days ago and couldn't stop drinking it night one. It's not even fully carbed yet but...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Ginger Ale

Haha @jaydlaw I was wondering about how heavy yours seemed. I tried making this with no extract so I ended up (rather unsuccessfully) trying to mash 3 lbs of 2 row and 1 lb of carapils. I've never mashed that small of a grain bill so that ended up being an interesting experience. With all said...

Dry Hopping - Whole vs Pellets

I've never been able to use whole hops but I've dry hopped 3 IPAs now with pellet hops and they've all come out great. You'll be fine to use pellet hops for sure. Take note how many days you dry hop though. I've read some tests that as little as 3 days gives maximum flavor, 5-7 days is also...

    Wee Heavy Strong Scotch Ale

Here's a couple links...I wouldn't be able to help with roasting yourself as I have no experience there. I've read a couple books with some details, so if you wanted to roast I'm sure you could look online. http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/briess-special-roast-malt.html...

You can get special roast at your LHBS. No need to mess with roasting yourself.

    Fruit Purée

I just got done reading Home Brew: Beyond the Basics, and I can honestly say it was my favorite brewing book BY FAR. I would highly recommend it. Anyway, the reason I mention it is because at the end of the book he talks about adding fruit. I've never done it, but the way he laid it out seemed...

    Beersmith2: Um what's the point?

I opened up this thread kind of expecting a different discussion, so I'll just ask the question and see what you guys think. For someone who doesn't have Beersmith yet, is there a significant difference between Beersmith and Beersmith2? I've really just been waiting to acquire a "brewing...
