Thermapen MK4... is it worth it?

Just sell me, how much easier can this make your life? Just curious because theyre selling for 76 right now. I use a glass lab thermometer to measure my mash temps now, but have plans of going electric/recirc/probe in the future. Not sure how soon that future will be though or if the...

    Need a new fermentor

Yeah I'm seriously considering it, its easy to use a calculator to do 4 or 8 gallon batches instead of 5 or 10. And what other fermentor has the perc of cold crashing and closed transfers under pressure? I have 5 Kegs too, and i like to have 4-5 available for finished beer, so im looking at...

First brew done, yummy, why the hangover?

As soon as I had temp control, it completely raised the bottom line of all my brew's quality. That being said I firmly believe that if you brew to style for the time of year and use a hardy, appropriate strain of yeast you can make amazing beer with no temp control. I'd just rather always...

@fatherdan what kind of fridge do you have?

    Need a new fermentor

Honestly i've been seriously considering switching to corny kegs for fermenting. I use a standard size fridge to ferment in and can only fit 2 buckets, where i think i could fit at least 4 kegs. This would mean brewing ~8 gal batches instead of 10 and ~4 instead of 5. Look into this if you...

    First all grain complete!

I vote no secondary! you have to clean and sanitize another vessel to prep you have to clean and sanitize once its done increased risk of infection unavoidable slight oxidation unless closed transfers Not that this stuff really makes a difference, but its simpler and cleaner to only do a...

First brew done, yummy, why the hangover?

Hmm, I have never had this happen with homebrew. Fermenting way too high would leave obvious bad flavors as well as a higher chance for headaches. Its strange though; maybe try a different source of ingredients? I would definitely try again but with a kit from morebeer.com or something similar...

Freshy Extra Pale w/ Citra Assistance Welcome

Here is V2 so far. I know that the IBU's for between end of boil and whirlpool aren't easy to estimate... But should there be enough to get roughly 30IBUs with these late boil/flameout additions considering the time it will take to drop to 170? Recipe Specifications...

Freshy Extra Pale w/ Citra Assistance Welcome

I feel so much variance in my perception of hops like mosaic, for example i've had extremely well blended strictly fruity beers that were simcoe eldorado mosiac, but 90% of the time mosaic is too heavy for me when used to achieve this style, which is that awesome pineapple flavor coincidentally...

Freshy Extra Pale w/ Citra Assistance Welcome

I'm looking for some serious juiciness, but not to the point where it takes away from the refreshing simplicity. I'll rework the volumes for losses, instead trying to get around 6~gal into my bucket, and also kick down the whirlpool/dry hops to 4whirl 3dry 3dry. The only reason I would want to...

Freshy Extra Pale w/ Citra Assistance Welcome

Thanks @Redlantern I will check out b'run water, and the plan was to do a 3:1 ratio I believe. The book i've been reading by Mike Karnowski suggests trying out: 65ppm Calcium 18ppm Magnesium 164ppm Sulfate 58ppm Chloride This is a treatment used not on RO, but on water that is basically devoid...

Freshy Extra Pale w/ Citra Assistance Welcome

This is my first AG and first time using BrewSmith. Doing no sparge BIAB in my 15gal BK that is insulated with reflectix and wrapped with a sleeping bag. I estimated my efficiency a little low for my first no sparge batch, not sure if I went too low in the estimate. I will be building from RO...

No Sparge BIAB, Ideal MT Size for 10Gal

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. I already have a 15gal pot that I got for a discount due to a dent so ill be sticking with that for some time. But the plan is to insulate that kettle and use it for the MT instead of a cooler, it just seems so much better to do one vessel when possible, and...

No Sparge BIAB, Ideal MT Size for 10Gal

I'd love to just mash in my kettle! I don't think it will hold temp this time of year and it would be too much trouble to transport the wort downstairs and outside to boil in the apartment i live at. One day soon though hopefully I can do 1 vessel that's why also why i'd like to spend as little...

No Sparge BIAB, Ideal MT Size for 10Gal

So with no sparge it isn't a problem to add however much water you need to achieve your pre boil volume after the mash? It seemed like you needed to have the proper pre boil volume in the mash for the mash to work properly. Or is it basically as long as the gravity is on point for your desired...

No Sparge BIAB, Ideal MT Size for 10Gal

Hey HBT, I've read through several threads/searches and know exactly what size mash tun I would need to do various gravity 5/10 gal batches if I were batch sparging. I used the BIAB calculator and it seemed that for even a 1.060 gravity 10gal no sparge batch I would need a mash tun volume...
