    Fermentation Temps

I have searched but could not find an answer. When yeast manufacturers give recommended temp ranges are they talking ambient/room temps or internal fermenter temps? For instance, I plan to pitch Nottingham to or row which has a range of 57° to 70°F. My fermenter is in the basement with a max...

    BIAB Food Safe Bag

I ended up ordering a bag from mashmaster in Australia - it was much more expensive than the alternatives but I took some comfort in the fact that they specifically state "Our bags are manufactured from food grade nylon" I received it this week, the bag is well made, plenty large enough for...

American Porter Bee Cave Brewery Robust Porter

I plan on brewing this tomorrow with the recipe as listed in post 1. This will be my first all grain batch, I am going with BIAB for pure simplicity. I have also managed to get away with pitching a pack of dry yeast right into cooled wort on my previous beers. I am thinking that if this hits...

    "Infected" or just off

In my case I am trying to eliminate sources of "off flavors" and hoped I could make a sweeping "its not an infection" declaration so that I could eliminate things like my fermenters as the culprit. When I say infection I am talking an unwanted fungus (like Brettanomyces) or bacteria (like...

    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

I will have to keep looking, all the ATC models I have seen have small ranges (topping out far below mash temps) for correction and are listed to correct the temp of the refractometer itself not the liquid to be tested. It's such a small amount I suppose the temp drops quick so it may be a...

    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

It was my understanding that temp adjusting refractometers were for temp correcting the device not the sample. Are there ones available that will work with a hot sample?

2012 Goose Island Bourbon County Stout

They did have a run on draft a few months back, that probably accounted for a bunch of the increase in produciton. They are also distributing to many more areas than in previous years, not sure if that accounts for the 5x uptick in priduciton but thought it was worth mentioning.

2012 Goose Island Bourbon County Stout

2012 Goose Island Bourbon County Stout

It released up north last week. Its due in my area (mid Atlantic) this week and next. If its anything like last year it will be near impossible to get any around me, last year I searched high and low to come up with 2 bottles total.

    "Infected" or just off

So what I am hearing is that a beer infection is probably like spoiled milk or a rotten egg, when it happens you will know for sure

    "Infected" or just off

I have had a couple of batches recently not turn out to be quite as good as I expected, others have. Once example is a cream ale that I brewed ~4.5 weeks ago that is just not right, has a sort of tang to it that makes me go "oh no, is it infected!" In reality I suppose it could be someting...

Are these Chinese units NSF-51 certified (tested food grade)

    BIAB Food Safe Bag

I am not sure on the food safeness (or more specifically the chemical leeching form paint strainer bags or voile material) I was really hoping for something that passed even some rudimentary level of testing to be deemed "food safe" at mashing temps. I know the material exists (since I have...

    BIAB Food Safe Bag

That one is actually not quite big enough etiher :-( The diamater of my kettle is 16.5, so I would need a bag with a 52" opening or 26" wide at the opening to be able to make it over the lip. I suppose I could get 2, and stich myself.

    BIAB Food Safe Bag

Looking for a food safe / food grade nylon bag for BIAB. None of the hop or grain or wine bags I find at my LHBS or online are large enough (well I found a few but they are very wide mesh). I found a few people in AU that sell premade (one size) bags that are listed as Food Grade but they...

    Portable igloo cooler kegerator

I snagged one, now to find some taps and shanks at a good price!

    Portable igloo cooler kegerator

Just an FYI - this cooler is currently $44.88 at Walmart with free shipping (if you add 12 cents of other eligable stuff to get total to 45). Better than target where shipping was through the roof and better than the only local store that wants 70 for it (Dicks Sports)

    Portable igloo cooler kegerator

Great info, my intention was to build a wooden collar of some sort so taht the kegs could be completely hidden. I thought about putting shanks through the collar but I would probably still be up against the kegs at that point. But, its safe to saw from a diameter perspective they will fit -...

    Portable igloo cooler kegerator

Will 2x 5 gallon (8.5in wide) cornies fit in the igloo 70 with no lid? I am assuming that since 2x22.5 and 3's will fit that 2x5's will as well?

    Hoppy but less bitter

Makes sense, I think I may take one of the first 3 beers that I have brewed and brew it a few more times just adjusting the hop schedule and see the results first hand. Is there any bare minimum for bittering hops? It seems playing with beersmith that I can acheive any level of IBU by adding...
