    Scary Caterpillar loves hops

I believe its a Question Mark Caterpillar (Polygonia interrogationis) - they can be attracted to and eat Hops. https://www.whatsthatbug.com/2012/06/25/questionmark-caterpillar-2/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygonia_interrogationis

The "Waiting for the Next Giveaway" Speakeasy

I'd only think the airlock would suck-in if the temps dropped, But it gets confusing with barrels, as the barrel warms up the wood expands absorbing more beer, and as the barrel cools it tightens back up. so slight temp variation can help to get the flavors out of the wood. You could raise the...

The "Waiting for the Next Giveaway" Speakeasy

I have a barley crusher got it on sale 50% off. It works, mind the gap. I use a rigid mud mixer to crank it, used to do a lot of drywall work. It cost more than the mill but the motor has s lot of torque and can handle slow speeds...

    White Labs Yeast Vault

After weeks of nice temps the day Hansen blend arrived it was 92F out. Brettanomyces Anomalus was supposed to arrive the same day...for some reason it was out for delivery in Roanoke 3.5 hours away, finally showed up three days later.

forgot/didn't know to crush coriander before adding!

It's easy to over spice, you should be fine with whole seeds.

    Pine Flavored Hops

I get a little pine from chinook and northern brewer but not like a pine forest or the descriptor people use for those hops. I think for some hops multiple addition throughout the boil can build up the sought after flavor, whereas other hops you will only get the descriptor in late additions...

    White Labs Yeast Vault

I believe because they just propagated it there should be enough cell count to be fine. If you do a starter I don't think it will be an issue. I'm doing a small 3.5 gallon "Special Kind of Helles" so I think I'll be fine just pitching it as is.

I really Like 007 (Idaho 7) Glad its gone into full production. Hopefully Sierra wont buy all of the commercial stock out this year. I spoke with they guy that created the strain at CBC at the Crosby hop farm booth. Idaho 6 (Genghis) was axed due to poor yield, but I can't wait to see what he...

    InBev Aquires Another Craft Brewery...

Business is business, the term "Craft" no longer has the meaning many people want to attribute to it or thought it meant. Small breweries who are now owned in part or entirety by large companies can still be a small group of people making a great beer, can still employ locally. The Brewers...

    National Homebrew Competition

yea I got the same email, but nothing seems to be on the site. Edit: Packages are up on the site now I had a Vienna Lager score 35. 1st time I ever made one. Barrel Aged Coffee Stout got 37 and went to mini-BoS but did not advance after that. Then there was a Red Rye IPA that got the 28 it...

    CO2 Blanket / Keg Question

day_trippr is correct, however if you keep checking if the pressure is still there, you will eventually need to re-pressurize. So If the Beer was not carbonated, yes it would absorb the C02 and appear to not be as pressurized. But a pressurized Keg of carbonated Beer will not loose pressure...

What in Hops Gives Either a Smooth or Harsh Bitterness?

In this case it may be your your mineral ratios. I think there is still a lot to learn about how the different Alpha acids combine to create the smooth vs harsh bitternes, but this article from Craft beer academy is a nice introduction. As always with taste and perception your results may...
