Opening the fermenter to check gravity?

So conflicted on this. Can I / Should I open my primary fermenter to test gravity? I've got two very different batches happening right now and I am not clear if the style, gravity , etc matter. Ultimately, I'd like to understand the fermentation process a little more closely, learn the numbers...

    Overcarbonated and too sweet

now that you mention it, carafoam is supposedly supposed "to aid in creating better foam improvement, improved head retention and a fuller body"- well moving onward...sounds like i can't do much now. Just be more careful on the packaging. Maybe time will soften the sweetness , no idea

    Overcarbonated and too sweet

Hi all - first all grain batch was tasted yesterday. Final consensus is that its way too carbonated, but also a bit too sweet. Initially i thought maybe i used too much priming sugar. On bottling day, I was quite pleased with the results and I hadn't felt it was too sweet when i tested before...

    Sanitizing Priming Sugar

Just found this, and thought I'd ask - i realize this is an OLD post I'm new to the culture and just did my first batch. I was meticulous about respecting the needs of sanitation through my whole process. Yesterday was bottling day. With everything (bottles, caps, siphon, hose) starsan'd, I...

Bottling in a swing top growler

Bottling day is around the corner. I have almost enough bottles but I’m gonna be short. Any thoughts on me using a growler with a swing top like this one (see attached image)? I know most of us will probably say try it and find out but I was just seeing if anyone had experience.

Sodium Metabisulphite for sanitizing (beer brewing)?

Thanks @RPh_Guy - what is RO? I forgot to ask, I've read that it can ruin the flavors of the beer. I don't plan to use the mbs for bottling only for brew day (will have the star san by then). Maybe I am overthinking the whole thing.

Sodium Metabisulphite for sanitizing (beer brewing)?

Hi all...waiting on my Star San delivery. However, my window to brew (aka free time for "dad") is days before that Star San arrival. I was given a bag of Sodium Metabisulphite by a local brewer wine maker down the road. A few questions in my head begin any brewers out there try this stuff? Is...

Scaling a recipe (2 different results)

Hi all... I'm preparing to scale a recipe. I am aware of two online calculators that will do this in a click Brewer's Friend - Homebrew Beer Recipes, Calculators, and Forum Homebrew Recipes, Tools & Community | Brewgr However, I'm trying to discern if one of these has a bug, or if chemistry...

Canadians!!! need some all-grain supplies here on Vancouver Island

Hi all...looking for an all-grain shop here on the island or the Canadian defacto for shopping/shipping grains/hops/yeasts/ etc. I'm familiar with OBK and a few other east coast competitors, but is there something closer?...I'm far north (past Nanaimo), so shipping is unavoidable. Side note...
