2.5 gallon batch in 6 gallon carboy

Thanks captain....I usually make 6 gallon wine kits, so I have a bunch of empty 6 gallon carboys right now. I don't really want to get a 3 gallon carboy for a test batch. Maybe I'll see if I can get a cheap bucket. If not, I'll just go ahead and use one of the 6 gal carboys and hope for the best.

ok, what stuffer do I buy?

That's a really nice stuffer. I'm considering the grizzly 5lb vertical stuffer, its $75, but it doesn't have the metal gears like that LEM one does. Not really sure if its a huge deal or not to have the metal gears in a home stuffer that isn't going to see a lot of abuse? Right now, I stuff...

2.5 gallon batch in 6 gallon carboy

Any reason you can't make a 2.5 gallon batch of Apfelwein in a 6 gallon carboy? I'd like to do a half batch first to see if we are going to like it as much as everybody else seems to. Is all the extra air space not a good idea?

Raising ferm temp on stout with wy 1084

The last few days it has gotten a bit cooler in the basement. It was down to 52, and the wort was down in the low 60's even with the brew belt cranked all the way up. I went out and got one of those oil filled electric heaters. The room temp is now up to 60, and the wort is now up to 68 with the...

    Cloud izing/ifying Beersmith!

they are in: C:\Users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\BeerSmith You will have to enable viewing of this folder in the control panel. Go to folder options and enable viewing of hidden files. Once you find the recipe file, just drag it to the dropbox.

    Cloud izing/ifying Beersmith!

It's all good JD:mug: I just got dropbox installed on the laptop.....BS is running just fine, and all my recipes are there! I too like to do most of the BS work on my PC, and use the laptop out in the garage on brewday. This is great, thanks for posting this!

    Cloud izing/ifying Beersmith!

Nope...not against the license. My email from Beersmith that has the program key says it can be installed on two computers. I found my recipes too....Win7 hides them in a virtual store folder.

    Cloud izing/ifying Beersmith!

I just opened a dropbox account, and moved my Beersmith folder to it. I had to re-enter my license key....but now I can't see any of my recipes. Are the recipe files stored somewhere other than the Beersmith folder?

Raising ferm temp on stout with wy 1084

I've brewed a dry stout using Wyeast 1084. I pitched the yeast @ 64° and have held that temp for 5 days now. The recipe I used(Jamil's) says to raise the temp by 6 degrees in the final third of fermentation to reduce diacetyl levels. Is this really necessary if I plan on keeping the beer in...

    Most accurate instant read thermometer?.

I use K type thermocouples along with a meter. I have a specific meter just for thermocouples, but many digital multi meters are able to use a thermocouple.

Thanks for all the help guys. I just finished brewing my stout. Got 74% efficiency, and hit all my numbers. Just pitched my yeast @ 65*. The sample tasted pretty darn good.

    Feeding The Horses

I refrigerate my spent grain and give it to my friends....for their chickens. Never even thought about giving to the horses....maybe I'll see if they enjoy it. I usually have to wait a few days to give it to them. I think it will keep for awhile if kept refrigerated.....at least a week?

    Two different mash temps

Thanks OLDBREW....I went with a single infusion for this brew. It's mashing now @ 152°. Now that I know how to do it with Beersmith(thanks BeernuT100)....I'll try a protein rest on the next batch. Thanks for the help guys! :mug:

    Two different mash temps

I do have set it up for my equipment. I usually just do a single infusion, medium body,no mash out in a cooler MT for my previous brews. But, this recipe specifically calls for a step mash. I may just try it with a single infusion and see how it turns out.....seems like the simplest method for now.

    Two different mash temps

I have 2lbs of flaked barley, 1 lb of roasted barley, and 6oz of chocolate malt....and marris otter pale too. The 2 step mash in beersmith assumes you are using a brewpot and heat source to mash in. Is it possible to do this in a cooler? Or maybe I should just mash in my brew kettle and adjust...

    Two different mash temps

That is how I sparged with my first three AG brews and they turned out fantastic! This is not the only dry stout recipe that I have seen that calls for a step mash. The current issue of BYO has a dry stout with a step mash. Thanks for the help.:rockin:
