    Starting Equipment

He has a valid point......I just don't feel like it's a big concern for the average home brewer. If the two metals were in contact for long periods, it might be an issue.

    Starting Equipment

I've been an electrician for 24yrs now, and have seen my fair share of cu/al corrosion. I'm fairly certain that it's not going to happen for the 30 minutes that the IC is in the al pot. I'll continue to use my al pot and cu chiller.

    Starting Equipment

Yeah...I'm pretty sure there's no issue with using a copper chiller in an aluminum pot. Its not like the two metals are in contact for a period long enough to cause a reaction.

Yup.....not a pro obviously.....but I am a pipe smoker, have a beard, and wear Carhartt bibs.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Brewed up Jamil's Nutty Man Brown Ale yesterday. It all went pretty well, got 81% efficiency with my new mill... pitched wyeast 1968 @ 65 degrees, and fermentation seems to be going well.

I completely underestimated role of oxygen

You know what kills me about wanting to get an O2 kit? ......years ago, probably about 20 or so, I bout a small oxy/propane torch kit. Then I got a full size oxy/acetylene setup, and never used that small set again. It sat in the garage until we moved about four years ago. I tossed it out!! I...

    LHBS Grain Crush & Efficiency

Nope...I didn't order any full sacks online. I can get a 50lb sack of domestic 2 row from my LHBS for a very good price. I am hoping to get in on a group buy, and save even more. But, buying in bulk, and having my own mill lets me brew when I want. I'm not pressured to brew just because I...

    LHBS Grain Crush & Efficiency

I am saving well over 50% on my base grain buy getting 50lb sacks instead of buying ten or twelve pounds at a time. Add that savings to the savings of better effiency, and it all adds up very quickly. I figure that the mill will pay for itself in a short time. Sent from my DROIDX using Home...

    LHBS Grain Crush & Efficiency

That's a good deal then! They only charge $6.99 for shipping.

    LHBS Grain Crush & Efficiency

I purchased it directly from C&S website. I'm really not sure what the hopper holds, I just fill it, crush...refill if necessary. Or, if I have a helper, they run the the drill while I pour the grain in from a bucket. I run the mill on a 1/2" dewalt drill motor that I have had for years.

    LHBS Grain Crush & Efficiency

Crankandstein model 2S with base and hopper was $126 delivered to my door. The default gap is .45, and I got 77-81% on my last few brews. I decided to get the Crankandstein because the base is plywood, not MDF. Money well spent.....just need to get in on a group buy now. Sent from my DROIDX...

yeast choices for next few brews

Thanks step...looks like I have much to learn about yeast. I guess it's just one of things I haven't paid much attention to. One of my best beers to date is a Dry Stout (from Jamil and Palmer's book) that I used Wyeast 1084...no starter. I did pay close attention to ferm temps though. Two of...

yeast choices for next few brews

Again, I thank you all for all the help! Guess it's time I look at re-using my yeast then. I had been primarily going with dry yeast just to keep the costs down, but getting 4 beers from one pack of liquid really appeals to the cheapskate in me! Thanks! Looks like I have some searching to do.

yeast choices for next few brews

Thanks for the help guys. I have only used liquid yeast twice. I used wyeast smack packs, but did not make a starter either time. I have been pretty comfortable using dry yeast, and doing my best to control fermentation temps. This might be a good time to try a brew with liquid yeast and a...

yeast choices for next few brews

Thanks for help blizzard! Was hoping to save some cash, that's why I figured I could use the 05 for the three. I haven't brewed an Alt yet, so I wasn't sure about the yeast choice.

yeast choices for next few brews

I have my next four brews picked out from Jamil and Palmer's "Brewing Classic Styles", and they list three yeast choices for each recipe. Not being familiar with all of them, I look to the experts here for some help please. I am brewing AG, if that makes any difference in yeast choice? Not sure...

Finer crush vs. coarser crush/ higher speed vs. lower speed

I use a Dewalt, non-variable speed, 1/2" drill motor to power my Crankandstein 2s. When I first hooked it up and ran it full speed(about450rpm) the crush was ok, lots of shredded husks though. I then hooked up my dimmer that I use to control the temp on my brew belt, and tried that. I guessed...

Filling mash tun lid with insulation

With my 48qt coleman, I would lose 4-5° over a one hour mash. I recently insulated the lid, and on a 90 min mash last weekend, I only lost 1°. I mash in my garage, or basement, depending on outdoor temps. I also preheat the tun. Sent from my DROIDX using Home Brew Talk
