    Gallon Jug

I have some gallon jugs: 1 old vinegar jug (screw top) 2or3 cider? jugs (half turn top) 2 four liter alcohol bottles (lab use, small screw top, different from the first one) do you think that some of these may hold carbonated beer? I am thinking of carbonating 2/3 gallon in these to...

    AG Clarity

I have read that starch haze is usually permanent, while chill haze is made up of proteins that form a complex with some other (polyphenols among them) things at low temperatures. The complex is insoluble and forms a coloidal haze that won't settle (stable coloid). So starch haze is mainly...

    Converting recipe volumes.

Actually I'm an argentinian living in the USA, and there is no way someone can convince me the british system is better than the metric... :D but as I learned to brew here I use the metric system for everything, except for brewing ;) As they say: when in rome do like the romans do :o

Dear Dr. Ruth; I'm having a bit of a problem with head rentention

arabic gum? When kid, I used to disolve a couple of tea spoons in some cold water and use it to glue stamps in my collection album... hahahaha it was a good homemade glue that holded nicely but could be disolved with water (and the stamps recovered)... I'd use this thing to afix labels to the...

    Converting recipe volumes.

NO, scale everything. Hops utilization depends of concentration. so if you boil it in a more concentrated wort and add watter to the fermenter, the IBU will be lower than expected (though not that different). so scale up all the ingredientes including boiling water.

I'd recomend a more philosofical thread as post of the year, like the old: is this mashing or just steeping? :D

Removing Gas container from guiness bottles..

why you cant presurize with co2 and use the widget? if you presurize to 2.2 atm with co2 you'll have overcarbonated beer at the moment you open it! I think that the widget will be loaded indeed but imagin a discharge of air+beer into such a highly carbonated ale! I came to realize of this...

Removing Gas container from guiness bottles..

we've discussed this before and I said I'd try... talk to my buddy in the lab. he works with liq N2 alot (freezing cow embryos). I also did some research and math. Practical problem is this: a tiny amount of liq N2 becomes a huge amount of gas when vaporized. so it would be easy to...

    Caramel cream ale?

a comparison: 8oz of lactose in 5 gal (1.18%) or 0.2 oz per pint. milk has 4.7 % app. (0.75 oz per pint aprox) So drinking a Pint of this beer is like drinking about 5 oz of milk. Don't know if this is too much for you, but the comparison may help. what if you replace the lactose by...

    Mead in the airlock!

I got quite a lot of foam in a 1G of that recipe. But instead of an airlock I used a sanitized ballooon: I put the baloon on the carboy/jug and puncture it (with a needle). It fills and then starts releasing co2 when the inside preasure is high enough to open the puncture. It got some foam up...

Homebrew hangovers worse than with BMC?

EDIT: walker is right. I withdraw my post and say that after reading each of his previous posts (including making "healthy" vegemite and a 1 year long primary fermentation) I think that he is not here to get help (or offer it). JP

    Extract Boddington's Recipe Anyone?

I'm working on a clone for the boddy's pub ale (not bitter). The recipe is simmilar, just use ligther crystal and no black malt. Started with a couple of recipes from the net. But I am not totally happy with the outcome yet. I have scheduled a new batch for this weekend or the next. One...

    Another Stout Recipe Question

Wait! you can imitate that head. not that you'll get the same, but will be certainly better that nothing! this is what I do: brew a beer with good head retention (stout in this case). naturally carbonate to low level (1.5 to 1.8 vol ONLY) you'll be priming with a ridiculously small amount of...
