Should I insulate the wood collar of my keezer?

I have a couple of keezers with wooden collars. I keep one of them, a 7 cf Magic Chef, in a shed with no AC in a pretty warm part of the US about 10 minutes by boat from the Gulf of Mexico and its collar is just wood with no other insulation. Just for grins I put a Kill-a-watt energy monitor...

Brewtoad Users- Import your recipes into Brewer's Friend!

I recently joined Brewer's Friend and I would like to import about 150 Beersmith 2 recipes into My Recipes. I followed the instructions on the link you provided for "Migrating Your Recipes from Beersmith To Brewer's Friend" but only 1 recipe will import. I tried creating both .xml and .bsmx...

    Back in the brewing game!

Welcome back to the cult! I started in 1992 but took about 6 years off before restarting in 2013. It's good to be back. Beersmith 2 desktop has been all the software I've needed except occasionally using an online BIAB or the Brewers Friend water additions calculator. You didn't ask about...

    Fermenter Options?

I vote Speidel as well. In 30 years of brewing I have gone through countless fermenters until finally settling on the Speidel 60L 5 years ago. I use a chest freezer fermenter so I built a pulley system over it to lift the 10 gallon batches in the Speidel into it. They're very easy to clean...

Issues with slow end of frementation with BIAB method

If you're referring to the Tilt I would disagree with the very unreliable description based on my 3 years of usage. In about half my batches I'll do an OG hydrometer reading and I have yet to take one that's more than .002 different from the Tilt's OG reading. The ending gravity readings...

    Jaybird's absence and cancer

What an uplifting post Jay, thanks for sharing it with us. I have lost many family and friends to cancer so it is awesome to hear of a victory. Frack cancer.

    Squeeze the bag

I brew 10 gallon BIAB batches usually with 25 lbs of grain in the bag. I can let the bag hang from a pulley for 30 minutes and still squeeze an additional 1/2 gallon out of it. No way I'm leaving 4 pints in the bag.

What do you do with the spent grain (from your mash)??

Mine goes from the BIAB bag to a garbage bag then into the garbage can. I tried composting but I think 25 lbs of grain or more each batch overwhelmed the system. I don't have a garden or friends with farm animals and when I tried spreading grain around the backyard my dogs couldn't stay out of...

    Most overrated beer

I think Fat Tire is a little bland but enjoyable. However for several of my friends it is literally the only beer they buy at the grocery store and I don't get the adoration.

How do you Mash in w/BIAB?

The few times I tried to combine LODO with BIAB I put all the grain in the bag and then underlet the pre-boiled mash water into the boil kettle. This was one of the recommendations from the LODO community. I think my efficiency dropped doing this if compared to my normal approach of adding the...

    What's their purpose?

I bought my cam locks from Bobby so that thread is a giant circle-something.

    What's their purpose?

I have quite a few quick disconnects on my brewing system and they all are the type where you squeeze a couple handles on each side to seal the connection. Each handle had a stainless o-ring like you'd see on a key chain and one of the two o-rings per disconnect had a cotter-like pin on it. I...

How to clean a hop strainer?

I have used one of these for a while but as I don't have an effective and efficient way to clean it I have stopped using it. Anybody have one and have a good way to clean it?

    Chumbo Rosado recipe?

I was recently in the Sierra Nevada taproom in Asheville, NC and among the many great beers I had the Chumbo Rosado stood out. My wife who is a wine drinker primarily and just tolerates beer also really enjoyed this one. At her request we bought a crowler of it to bring home. I am even...

    Using Gelatin for Clarity

This was a pretty convincing test of the cold vs warm gelatin question: Gelatin Fining - Cold Versus Warm I cold crash the fermenter using a CO2 filled balloon attached to the airlock to avoid air intake, then when cold I add gelatin and later keg into CO2 purged kegs. I like to purge kegs by...

    Happy birthday Charlie Papazian

According to wikipedia, Charlie Papazian is 72 today so happy birthday Charlie! When I started brewing in 1992 the only resource I had was his book and I still have it.
