    Best Canned Beers

I love me some Monk's Blood in a can, but it's definitely a winter beer.

Bringing homebrewing up in a job interview

I'd definitely let it come up unless you live in one of those "dry" places one hears about and homebrewing really IS the easiest way to have hooch on hand. In places where that's not the case, homebrewing means that you have deliberately chosen a leisure activity that requires you to do...

Growing hops beside pine and spruce trees

Pine needles will make the soil a little more acidic, but no hop that I've ever met seems to mind that--my soil is fairly tart too, being in large part pine mulch, and my Saaz and Cascade do juuuust fine. Water and sun are a much bigger deal and you've got that covered.

    Beer From Only One Brewery?

Elysian Brewing, no doubt. Partially because they do pretty much every style, but mostly because they're my own personal Jesus of pumpkin beer.

    Yarrow

I googled "dried yarrow" and what do you know: it even comes in organic. Edit: looks like that's out of stock at the mo', though, so there's this and this.

Anybody concerned about this hobby on their health?

I'm considering dialing back my batch size for health reasons too. Having a lot of beer around does mean I drink more of it, and as a woman I'm apparently courting a grim doom if I have more than 1 per day. Which sucks. One beer is not a lot of beer, and I love beer. I'm healthy and I want to...

    Elder Scrolls Skyrim

I do a fair bit of shooting myself, but mostly I use the sneaking to get closer so I can bust heads more effectively with my glass hammer. There has never been a better weapon, and there will never be a better weapon. The glass hammer conquers all.

    Elder Scrolls Skyrim

I have been having an absolute blast with Skyrim. I'm playing a bizarre mix of two-handed heavy armor fighter and sneak-thief but hey, it's working out so far. I gotta say, my favorite part of the entire game so far? Standing in the middle of the Whiterun market, pulling out a fresh human heart...

    One for the little lady????

The important thing isn't that she's female, it's that she's used to light lager. I assume you don't want to make one of those--but maybe you do? Consider the possibility of making something that's very close to something she already likes, but with a little bit of difference. Think about the...

Trying to keep it simple but, perfection dominates

Best advice. It's easy to get clenchy and start counting bubbles and making tables of gravity readings, but all the beer really wants you to do is wait.

What happens if i mix two types of hops at the same time?

You're clearly doing it wrong. You should be mixing two ounces of Columbus with three ounces of Cascade. :rockin:

    Adding thing to make flavor

It's also a realization, which can be made even before your first beer, that the chemistry and process of beer is pretty damn forgiving and gives you a wide field for experimentation. Most adjuncts even have tried-and-true amounts and instructions, if the brewer doesn't feel like being the first...

    Adding thing to make flavor

Pff, I say caution is overrated. If you want to dump some herbs or fruit in, why not? 20 brews before you dare to experiment is horseradish. A few (very) rough guidelines, based on a 5-gallon batch size: Fruit usually goes in late. Ferment your wort, rack it to a secondary fermenter, and add...

    Sour Beer Cross Contamination

There's definitely a threat. Yeast can be airborne, after all. That said, I suspect the risk to be pretty badly overstated based on my own experiments with sours. I use the same (plastic) bucket and bottling equipment for everything, and normal cleaning procedures--not even very strict...

Is Christmas for brewers like New Years at the gym?

I suppose it's a bit like New Year's in that all the newcomers are using the equipment and there's none for you--I've been skunked for the hops and sanitizer I need at the local brewshop twice in the last week. I don't mind though, that was me once.

    Today's Hot Scotchy

They're delicious with dark malt--I just made a stout with nice big black patent and roasted barley additions and I'm enjoying the results right now. (Caveat: mine's a brandywort, not a hot scotchie per se. I don't think the differences affect how nicely the dark malts work.)

will lactose sugar mellow out overtime??

Because it's non-fermentable, there's not much going on in the bottle that can affect it. I think you're stuck with very sweet beer: 8 oz is a lot, that's twice or more the amount I usually see for a 5 gal batch. You could try your hand at blending, and mix it up with another batch then...

    Do your wives get mad?

Fairly offensive? Saying outright that it's not just acceptable but desirable to hit women is deeply messed-up and wholly inappropriate. It shouldn't make a difference, but in the event that it helps keep amc22 suitably embarrassed to let #@$%@$# like that out of his face: there are women here.

How to Make Milk That’ll Get You Hammered (article)

Never heard of "whole vodka", and I can't see a need for the vodka in this recipe to do anything that the standard bottom-shelf stuff won't take care of. I'm going to try this for sure--I'll be sure to let you know about the results I get with bog-standard econovod.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I'm going to sprain my Christmas gland good, and then I'm going to come home and get a double batch of sima going. Should be soda-grade in a couple of days and saison-grade for New Year's Eve.
