How often do you guys brew?

I brew as much as my wallet can afford. So far this year I have brewed (5) 5gal batches of beer and (1) 3gal batch of blackberry wine

    Should I rack to secondary?

I went on the light side this time as I didn't want to over power the 5gal batch with too strong of a bourbon flavor, so I only used what enough to cover the oak chips while they soaked which was close to 4oz. Can't wait to taste it once its carbed and has conditioned. By far my fav style of brew

Some lessons from my second brew

I perform a similar series of steps. 1. I read my instructions for kits and or recipes a couple times over and highlight all the main steps and important notes with a highlighter 2. I actually label my hop additions, DME, LME, etc with a number correlating to when they get added 3. I then wash...

To tinker or not to tinker

I haven't. I'll definitely report back how it turns out but will be a few weeks. If it comes out close to an Oberon or Blue Moon then I'll be happy. Fingers crossed.

    Should I rack to secondary?

I have made the exact same kit. I soaked my boiled oak chips in bourbon for 2 days prior to racking the stout on top of them into a secondary after 7days. I then let it sit in the secondary with the oak chips for 14days and then bottled it. I like a stronger bourbon flavor and when testing it...

    Styrian Goldings (Celeia)... Experience?

I just brewed a Belgian White with them this past weekend. They had a very mild aroma in the package, too the point that I was actually surprised when I took a deep nose full of them prior to dropping them in the boil. Not sure how the flavor is yet, hoping they have some citrus notes to them to...

Worst Commercial Beer You've Ever Had?

Wow, I am surprised to read this. Saw that beer highlighted on "Brew Dogs" paired with some food and touted as a pretty good beer.

Not Sure My Brew Is Fermenting

Agreed, I have witnessed lids on my fermenters literally expand in the center with air locks prior to using blow off tubes, so I know they were sealed well. Maybe just a difference in manufacturers?

    What's in your fermenter(s)?

    5gal of Belgian White

Not Sure My Brew Is Fermenting

I recently learned that the tops on some of those buckets are not air tight even when then are fully on and "sealed." I had a very active fermentation that came out the air lock and seaped out from under the lid around the sides prior to eventually blowing one side of the lid off. So this is...

Worst Commercial Beer You've Ever Had?

:oRolling Rock, Keystone, Busch, Busch Light, Natural Light, Natural Light Ice, and pretty much anything sold in a 40oz that you can buy at the gas station.:o I learned a lot in college. None of it was in the classroom but at least I walked away knowing what good beer was. :)

To tinker or not to tinker

I just did a Belgian White last weekend, I too like more of the citrus orange flavor as does the wife whom I made this for. I used 1 oz of Styrian Golding hops at the beginning of a 45min boil. To try and give it more punch I also added 1oz of navel orange zest and two medium navel oranges that...

    Overshot my SG

I usually top off when I transfer to my primary from my brew kettle to ensure I am at 5gal but doing it at the bottle time seems just as good as long as water is boiled to avoid contamination during bottling.

    Anyone trying part-open fermentation?

So far I guess I have been lucky in that I have been using sealed buckets with air locks, however I did have one very active fermentation a little over a week ago on a stout that caused it to blow one side of the lid off resulting in a fair amount of mess to clean off the side of a dresser and...

    Hello from NYC

Greetings, I spent a few years living out on LI. Miss the city and all its quirks.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Heavy Scotch Ale this weekend for me. Will be the first time I have to take some of the wort out and purposefully caramelize it so its got me a little nervous if I will get it to turn out the way I am hoping but finger's crossed!
