    New HERMS Finally Fired Up

Finally got the new system up and running today on a Russian Imperial Stout. During the recirculation, the removable table top with the mash tun and pump are at the level of the sparge tank. The copper coil heat exchanger is in the sparge tank. When the mash is too...

    NewHERMS

Set up #2. After the mash is done, the removable table with the mash tun and pump goes to ground level. The sparge tank (upper right) feeds the top of the grain bed by gravity. The pump then fills the brew kettle (upper left). Once it is full, the sparge tank is removed and the brew kettle...

    NewHERMS

Temperature probe. If the temp gets too low, I heat the sparge water which has the HERMS coil inside. If it gets too high, I raise the copper coil out of the sparge water.

The copper coil from the pump sitting in the sparge tank. The output of the coil goes to the top of the mash tun.

    NewHERMS

This is set up #1. During the recirculation, the mash tun is at the same level as the sparge tank. The pump and mash tun are on a removable table that sits on the main surface. The output of the pump goes into into a copper coil that is in the sparge tank.

Beer Line Length and Pressure Calculator

By popular demand - okay, maybe not popular demand, but 2 people asked - the Beer Line Length Calculators in full metric, and for Canadians, partial metric (pressure in psi).

Beer Line Length and Pressure Calculator

It is the temperature the beer is at. The gas needs to dissolve into solution. I don't think so. Why would you want to go above 55F? The calculator is meant to be a tool to carbonate specific styles to their appropriate levels. Are there styles that I am missing that should be higher or...

    Great Lakes Brewery Blackout Stout

I just got a post from them on Facebook that it is now on tap at the brewery. Just in time as I am heading up on Friday.

    What are you drinking now?

Alesmith Wee Heavy I can't think of many beers I have had better than this.

    Rouge: Dirtoir Black Lager

I had one of these a week ago. I saw black lager and expected schwartzbier-ish, but same as other posters, I was surprised (and pleased) but the level of roast. SWMBO and I really enjoyed it. She liked it so much that she picked up another bottle unsolicited. It got a 97 on ratebeer FWIW.

    fermenting raising temps

Yes, fermentation releases heat into whatever vessel the wort is in - sometimes lots of heat. It can be as much as 4C. As to what temperature this starts, that is dependent on the strain of yeast. If you are on the lower end of the recommended range for the yeast, activity is slower and...

    Why one hour for boil?

Some beers benefit from a bit of extra carmelization you get from a longer boil - Scottish Ales come to mind. On other beers, I do find you get better utilization from the extra 30 minutes. It is not 1 for 1 - 50% longer boil does not get you 50% more utilization as the chart posted earlier...

    Hi, TbM from Cincinnati Ohio

Welcome TbM. There are a few of us Cincy folks on here and we occasionally have group brews - keep checking in!

    Using R/O water for brewing.

You may want to group styles by their color as the roast of the malt affects pH which affects the mash conversion. You also have the sulphur/bitterness link, but that is another issue, although less important than pH. There are several water chemistry tools available that will build your...

    Disconnects for Heat Exchanger Coil

Thanks for the link Bobby - awesome! Cheaper than polysulfone QDs and one less part since the SS coupler would not be needed because there is availbility of a female NPT ended QD. I think these will work fine as it is not a through the wall design. It looks like I do the following...

    Disconnects for Heat Exchanger Coil

I am planning on using QDs on my heat exchanger copper coil in my HERMS. I was thinking of soldering copper threaded connections on the ends of the coil, attaching SS couplers to the threaded connections, and then connecting polysulphone QDs to the couplers. Anyone have an easier way of doing...

    2009 Fantasy Football Veterans League

Thanks everyone. That had to be the most underwhelming playoff run of all time as I never cracked 100 any of the 3 weeks (although never under 90 either). Just good luck and good timing against some extremely strong teams. Already looking forward to next year...
