    Building up a Starter?

Hmm, guess I had just assumed that it wouldn't work but haven't actually tried. Good idea!

    Building up a Starter?

Yeah, I have a 1G growler but trying to make use of the stir plate. Maybe I will split it and just put 2L on the plate and the rest in the growler then combine what I have at the end.

    Building up a Starter?

So I am making 10 gallon lager on Saturday, Beersmith suggests I make a 6L starter. I use a stir plate and the max I can get is about 1.5L. So my question is can I do three or four 1.5L starters, decanting each time, over the next 6 days as an equivalent or does it need to be 6L at once? Thanks

    refractometer question

So it seems that many people had refractometers where 23 Brix = 1.088 and many had 23 Brix = 1.096. The earlier posts seemed to indicate that 1.096 was closer (and matched conversion tables) but the experiment seemed to show that 1.088 was closer? Mine reads 1.088 and is always low compared to...

    More Beer refractometer.

Is it the same? The morebeer one claims to have a new non-linear SG scale that throws off most dual scale refractometers. I think I have the same one that you carry (looks the same and has same bag) and the SG scale is not accurate.

    Yeast harvest

Make a starter with it when you use it again and make sure it smells good. I lost a batch that I pitched old yeast into because I thought it was borderline. When in doubt, throw it out. I have had successful batches using yeast that was up to three month old since harvesting.

    Refractometer

I checked the scale today, at 26 Brix it shows 1.100 as the equivalent SG. Beersmith says that it should be 1.108 so there is a 0.008 point difference! Is this a common problem with all SG scales? Seems like it would be so easy for the manufacturer to correct.

    Refractometer

I will check the Brix scale when I get home to see if that shows a discrepancy between scales. Seems like that is a easy flaw for a manufacturer to fix. It had a bunch of positive reviews and nobody mentioned that about the SG scale being inaccurate.

    Refractometer

It has both Brix and SG (dual scale), so .01 is the closest you can get? That doesn't seem worthwhile if that is all you can get.

    Refractometer

Bought a $45 refractometer that measures in both SG and Brix. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006GG0TDK/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M3T1_SC_dp_1 Calibrated it with distilled water and did some tests. My accurate hydrometer read 1.047 (temp adjusted) and the refractometer read 1.042-1.045 over 4...

    Wild yeast?

Tried to reuse a yeast strain from about 5 months ago, made a starter and it took a full day and a half to get going but then had a sort of sour aroma. Pitched against my better judgement and had about 4 days of the most vigorous fermentation that I have ever seen, a krausen of about 7" in...

    Beer Nightmare Comes True!

Somewhat oily surface, not sure if that is from the starsan or infection but there were small whitish floaties. Dumped it all, broke down all kegs, taps, hoses, carboys, and equipment. Soaked in PBW, scrubbed down and rinsed with starsan, replaced all co2 and beer lines. Holefly whatever it was...

    Beer Nightmare Comes True!

What do I do to see if its carbonic acid, keep purging? Or is it ruined?

    Beer Nightmare Comes True!

    Didn't freeze

    Beer Nightmare Comes True!

Also it affected 2 kegs so it must have happened a while ago. Seems strange that all of a sudden an ingestion shows up right as the co2 goes out?

    Beer Nightmare Comes True!

Any idea how an infection could take over so rapidly after all of the transferring was complete? It had been sitting for 2 weeks carbing then all of a sudden...

    Beer Nightmare Comes True!

Ok, tasted again and here is me best explanation: More of a problem with taste than smell Somewhat sour apple/ acidic Mouth numbing Astringent Remember that it was fully carbed and tasting great before the co2 ran out. Any guesses?
  18. J

    Beer Nightmare Comes True!

Would it be possible that the co2 container had some air in the bottom? I have used the same one before so not sure of that is even possible?
  19. J

    Beer Nightmare Comes True!

It's a lager that was cold crashed to 32 degrees before kegging so its def not trub and there can't be much yeast, even so I don't see how the relief valve would stir up the bottom of a 5 gal keg?

    Beer Nightmare Comes True!

Let me taste it again when I get home and I will try to give more details, unfortunately I am terrible at describing taste but I will do my best. What about the darker color, is this indicative of oxygen or infection. Also has anyone had inspection spread to several kegs through the co2 line and...
