    Low OG For Your Consideration.

So per recipe I missed by 6 points, according to beersmith I missed by 15 points. I'm going to need another homebrew... I trusted LHBS...

    Tricks to control temp?

There are all kinds of tricks, wet t-shirt and a fan, set your fv in a tub of water and add ice daily as need, etc. But frankly I couldn't be bothered. I hide my fvs in the coolest room in the house with the A/C set on 72̊. I'm not going to win any competitions, but I'm drinking fine beer...

    Low OG For Your Consideration.

For the record, I am relaxed, I’m not worried, I’ve had several homebrews. However, I am new to this and I thought I’d run my recipe and process by those in the know and who better than the HBT community. The recipe calls for an OG of 1.049, I got 1.043 and that is adjusted for...

Can sufficient bitterness be obtained for an IPA in a 15 minute boil?

Basic Brewing Video (James Spencer) does an episode on a 15 minute APA.

    Noobs Pointless Post #3.

I considered buying a keg but realized my beer would sit in it, hot, uncarbed, and unextractable:D

    Noobs Pointless Post #3.

For half the morning and most of the afternoon, I de-labeled, washed, sanitized, filled, capped and stored 89 bottles of beer. I hope those of you who keg your beer can contain your envy. What with your ability to keg 10 gallons of beer in a few hours, including prep and clean up. I mean I got...

    Bottling day sanitizing

I think you can sanitize clean bottles with high temps or a sanitize setting but I think Jet Dry or equivalents are evil to beer.

    Newbie Question

I made the exact same mistake. When I bought my kit I saw the 1 liter flip tops and thought to myself, quicker and easier bottling. It's a mistake, it is pysically impossible for a first batch brewer to wait long enough for 1 liter bottles to carb properly. Despite the above advice, I know you...

    Noobs pointless post No. 2.

I have two 5g batches in primary now, but they will not be ready to bottle until July 1 at the earliest. I don't think my American Pale will last that long. However, when the 10g I have fermenting now is ready to drink I will have another 10g fermenting. At that point I think my pipeline will be...

    Noobs pointless post No. 2.

My first 5g extract batch was an American Wheat. As an impatient noob I drank it all during weeks three and four of bottle conditioning. It was still a bit green, but it was MY first batch and I loved it. My second batch is a London Porter. Its been conditioning for six weeks now and it still...

    Adding the finishing sugar hot

Not that he is a master brewer or anything, but I just watched a James Spencer Basic Brewing Video where he starts his siphon and then adds the hot priming sugar rignt into the bottling bucket. Now that I think about it, it was Steve that was bottling. Same, same though.

    Inadvertent High Temps During Ferment

Today outside temps approached 100 degrees and my air conditioner drain line clogged forcing the unit to shut off. I have a pale ale and an IPA in primary, 6 days and 3 days respectively. I don’t know when the air conditioner shut off but when I got home at 6 pm the sticky thermometers on the...

covering wort pre-hops to achieve boil?

Thanks all. It's nice to have a site where you can ask questions while you are brewing and get quick answers. I covered the pot until about 200° and then keep the foam controled for the next 12°. Now I'm boiling happily with 30 mins until my next hop addition.

Is it ok to cover the wort to achieve a quicker boil prior to the 60 min hop addition?

    Zero Minute Hop Addition (Extract)

Palmer says to add at zero and steap for 10, so thats what I'm doing, lid off for steap, lid on for chill.

    Zero Minute Hop Addition (Extract)

I’m boiling an American Pale Ale right now with 60, 25, 10 and 0 minute hop additions. I know too do the boil with the lid off the kettle. However, I usually cover the kettle during the ice bath for chilling. With a 0 minute hop addition should I cover the kettle for chilling or leave it...

A testament to the rarity of infection.

On March 7th I brewed my first 5g extract kit, I have about 96oz left. I brewed it using the cheapest bucket kit at simi-LHBS. I took the equipment home an washed it with Planet dishwashing liquid and began my boil. Post hot break I began my sanitation with the sanitizer that came with the kit...
