    10 day active ferment?

Brewed up a 1.070 IPA 10 days ago that took off like a rocket - I mean, totally blew the top off my carboy.... twice! I had 3.5 days of volcanic fermentation which finally slowed. Temp dropped, so I relocated to a warmer part of the house to finish off. That was 5 days ago! I am still seeing...

Cider results? What will I get?

For you apfelwine afficianados out there - how long does this need to age in the bottle before developing good character? I made one recently that I tested out soon after bottling and was fairly unimpressed with the depth of flavor.

Brewing setup question for busy dads

I ran into the same issues when my kids were little. It led me away from the hobby for awhile. I would rather not get up super early to brew as I tend to want to enjoy a tasty beverage during the process and I have been told by my better half that beer at 6am is socially unaceptable. I also...

    Chai Ingredient Question

I agree, that seems like a ton of spice. Perhaps that amount makes sense in this application making a low volume tea, but personally I would not risk 5 gallons of beer on it unless you get some confirmation on this approach.

    Stratified wort

Thanks. Certainly used to seeing the layer of gunk at the bottom, just not used to seeing a distinct layer at about 1/2 my total volume. Probably just looking at it earlier than normal. This recipe had me mash 1 lb of quick rolled oats to the mash and then add .5 lbs of steel cut oats...

    First batch seems happy

Looks like it is bubbling away nicely! Proof positive that making beer is very forgiving. You can screw quite a bit up and still end up with beer! Second the comments on your fermentation chamber. I really need to make me one of those.

    Stratified wort

Experienced something unusual for me last night about 3 hours after pitching into an oatmeal stout. I went in to check on the batch and noted that the volume was stratified about 50/50. Lower half was noticeably lighter in color than the top half. Fermentation had not started yet, and this...

Dual Regulator - Good Idea or Wasted Money?

The dual is the way to go. Love being able to carb one keg and serve a separate one. I will say that you have to be really careful balancing though, this will make your CO2 very top heavy. I have caught mine falling on more than one occasion.

What's THE worst movie you've ever seen?

Has to be Legends of the Fall. Then gf now wife made me rent it. We cozied on the couch to watch this god awful stink fest and I kept my thoughts to myself as it went on and on for hours. When it was over, looked down to see my gf was snoozing and had missed half of it. The things we do to...

Jbob - thanks for finding this! - This was the article that sent me down this road.

    opinion on mash process

I do stir, but not that frequently. Like to just leave the mash alone to work as well as hold the temp. I also probably need to hold at mash out longer so I will give both a try and see if I end up with a higher number. If I can get to 75% regularly I would be happy with that. Still only a...

    opinion on mash process

Bunk huh? And it was so sciency and convincing :) Maybe I will just stay the course then and avoid the potential blisters! More votes in opposition than in support.

    opinion on mash process

I have been toying with changing my process to mash in the bag with a more traditional AG water to grain ratio and then adding water at 180 or so at mash out to get to full volume. Hoping the add of 180 water will get my mash temp around 170 where I can hold it for 10 minutes or so prior to...

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

Not an expert here, but if you varied your grain bill or boil time you will need to recalculate the total water volume.
