    Brew Day Simplification Plan

I am trying to simplify my (extract) brew day. I have tried a few approaches but all have had their drawbacks. Using my hop spider blocks using the lid to get rolling boil, muslin bags let through lots of fine dust and particulates, and the mesh strainer over the bucket almost instantly clogs...

    Cigar City Jai Alai Clone

Check out this recipe kit. The second link has the complete recipe for it. https://www.homebrewing.org/Jai-Alai-IPA-Clone-All-Grain-Recipe_p_10534.html https://www.homebrewing.org/assets/images/Recipe_Instructions_2019/22130.pdf

    Temperature Issues

I wasn't even thinking of trying to cold crash it, just hold down the temperature during fermentation. Right now I just have the bucket in my closet with standalone AC unit on full blast and I still can't get it to drop below 74F. When I got up this morning my wife asked me why I was putting on...

    Temperature Issues

Yeah, ice isn't great. But in my case, I only need to drop it down a few degrees. And the box I'm going to build is well insulated and holds up to 16 two liter ice bottles. With the same source materials I could double that. And again, $30. LOL

    Temperature Issues

Thanks. Funny you mentioned it. I designed an insulated fermentation chamber for 2L soda bottle ice blocks just today that will hold one fermenter (the bucket I'm using now but will also fit a 6.5G carboy or a Catalyst conical). I'm going to use one here of radiant barrier OSB and one sheet of...

    Temperature Issues

Thanks. Yes, I've spent that 48 hours doing a post mortem. I've documented the biggest hurdles and how to eliminate them. Some stuff I can hucklebuck together but some I'll just have to throw money at (if my CFO will approve the purchase order).

    Temperature Issues

Brew day involved way more stress than a "fun hobby" should entail. Oh, it started full of promise. I got up early and mowed the lawn to make the wife happy. Then started prepping to make MoreBeer's Pliny the Elder clone (LME, 5 gallon). I was so excited. And then...I started. Well, turns out...

    FF vs Catalyst

They sell a cover for it that they say blocks 100% of UV light. As for it being clear, well, glass carboys have been used for years and they are clear.

5 gallon carboy vs 6 gallon bucket for Primary

Thanks. Yeah, I decided to go with the bucket for all the reasons you and others mentioned. I think the lid problem was really that I just wasn't pushing it down all the way around. It is so tight that it takes a great deal of effort which is good is suppose but it also physically hurts my hands...

    Beer Bottle Labels?

I use these colored dot stickers on the bottle caps. Then I just keep track of what each color currently represents. The caps gets tossed and I don't have to worry about removing labels ever. It ain't fancy but it is quick and easy...

Ah. Gotcha. Thanks for the help.

5 gallon carboy vs 6 gallon bucket for Primary

The description said it was 1.070-1.074 so on the calculators I use I split the difference and used 1.072 which came to 331B cells. The WLP001 packs say 100B cells each so 2 packs would still be 131B cells short. And that is assuming that the packs are 100% viable. Was that not how that works...

Direct pitch yeast for 5 gallon Pliny the Elder clone

Cool. The only reason that I was thinking of doing both dry packs is that they've been in my freezer for 2 years and my have taken a hit on viability. But yes, I plan on grabbing one of the start kits with the DME, flask, etc. I'll just have to pad my budget when I submit the PO to the CFO...

5 gallon carboy vs 6 gallon bucket for Primary

Thanks. I am not prepared to do a start so the plan is to direct pitch 2 of the White Labs WLP001 PurePitch packs. The claims 200B cells which might be a bit short. I've used a couple of different calculators and got targets of 250B and 330B. But I also have a couple of packs of Safale 04 the I...

Direct pitch yeast for 5 gallon Pliny the Elder clone

Thanks. Unfortunately, I have no DME on hand. The only ingredients I'll have is what comes in the kit. Budget is zero at this point so I'll have to start gathering things for future brews. This times I'll have to pitch direct. That being the case, I'll go ahead and proof one or two packs of the...

Direct pitch yeast for 5 gallon Pliny the Elder clone

I read that dry brewer's yeast can be frozen. I've always kept bread yeast in the freezer no problem. Granted 2 years is pretty excessive. I'd imagine viability has suffered. So which is the bigger consequence, underpitching or overpitching in a big beer like this one?
  17. foscojo

5 gallon carboy vs 6 gallon bucket for Primary

Thanks. I'm on a tight budget right now so unfortunately, I won't be equiped to do a starter this time around so I'll have to do direct pitch but I can shake it and add nutrient. I could use a mason jar for a flask and agitate by hand but I have no spare DME to use. I do have a hop spider and...

5 gallon carboy vs 6 gallon bucket for Primary

Thanks, so would you then choose to primary in the regular bucket or the bottling bucket for an easier transfer to the carboy for secondary? Could the yeast cake from 2 liquid packs clog the spigot?

5 gallon carboy vs 6 gallon bucket for Primary

I am preparing to brew a Pliny the Elder DIPA clone. Should be a vigorous fermentation. I inherited a couple of True Brew 6+ gallon buckets and a couple of 5 gallon glass carboys. I've heard the True Brew buckets have issues with the lids not sealing properly. So here's my dilemma for primary...

Direct pitch yeast for 5 gallon Pliny the Elder clone

Thanks. The MoreBeer kit says estimated OG should be 1.070-76. I just checked and I do have 2-3 packets of Fermentis Safale S-04 yeast. It has been in my freezer for about 2 years (packet date 01/2018). I could wake up a couple of those and pitch with White Labs. And maybe save the 3rd packet...
