    My Experience with SS Brewtech

I will be sure to update this thead if there is interest from folks like yourself. OBK immediately asked me what I wanted and suggested either a refund or exchange. Personally, I'm concerned that the next batch will be equally as bad and I spent a good couple hours cleaning and scrubbing these...

    My Experience with SS Brewtech

I recently finalized my months-long decision on a brewing system and decided that I'd go 3 vessel RIMS or HERMS and made my first hot side purchases: The SS Brew Kettle BME and the Infussion Mash Tun, both in 10 G. I'll figure out the third vessel and which direction I go with heating the mash...

Ss Brew tech BME heating efficiency

I'm actually planning on getting both the bme kettle and infussion mash tun in 10G - the mash tun is an absolute certainty, it's exactly what im looking for and there aren't really any close substitutes that are readily available to me in the Canadian market (other than plastic coolers). I'm...

Ss Brew tech BME heating efficiency

I'm wondering if anyone whose used the ss brewtech BME kettle with the dished base and firebox can comment on this kettle's heating times. SS claims these kettle's heat up faster than traditional flat bottomed kettles, and going back in time on the threads I've found it seemed like they...

EKG and Idaho 7 for a Pale ale?

Aside from our obvious natural biases to avoid combining hops that are traditionally used for very different beer styles like in this example, are there documented cases of hop varieties that play poorly together?

EKG and Idaho 7 for a Pale ale?

This tool is amazing! I just spent way too much money on hops as one of the Canadian online retailers had a 20% off sale. Thanks for sharing!

End results with low mash efficiency

Appreciate this advice! I actually have a second 5 gallon stock pot that I use to hold the grain bag after done the "squeeze". I never thought to do the pour over in this second pot and do a "dunk sparge" but I'll definitely give this a go! At this stage, I'd rather over shoot my gravity...

End results with low mash efficiency

Yup, same conclusion I've come to - I was aware of the diastaic power ahead of time and to be cognizant of that when setting up brews, but I had not heard about the challenges with gelatinizing wheat, or the challenges with grinding it. Good lessons for me on this batch as I'm realizing my...

End results with low mash efficiency

My current mash technique for BIAB (which I'm certainly open to adjusting) has me resting with lid on and insulated behind some winter jackets. I usually stir/adjust ph/take gravity every 10-15 min for 1 hour. Going forward though (until I buy a mill) I'll keep mashing until I hit my number, and...

End results with low mash efficiency

Really glad to hear from both of you that you don't think the low mash efficiency will make this batch a dumper on its own! At the least, I want to make sure I'm learning from these first batches, and in this particular part of the brew I think I regressed a bit. In my second batch, I was...

End results with low mash efficiency

I completed my 3rd all grain mash yesterday - an attempt at a German wheat beer. My grain bill was: 60% wheat malt 35% pilsner Malt 5% carapils This brew did not go well after nailing my ph adjustment ~10 min into the mash. I ended up with approximately 55% mash efficiency. After completing...

    Annual CO2 Usage

I had the air Liquide guy agreeing to send a 20lb CO2 bottle to my house, but balked at the price (in my first post). I think I could probably do it, but paying $110+ per year for the bottle is a deal breaker for me. I don't think I need enough CO2 to justify that.

    Annual CO2 Usage

I went with corn sugar on these, but that's good to know! Makes sense I suppose, less head space = less gas

    Annual CO2 Usage

Well my cheap 8L Oxebar kegs arrived just in time for me to be able to complete my first o2 "free" transfer this evening. I weighed my SodaStream bottle before and after and was surprised how little CO2 I used - only 66 grams! Considering I also added some cold brew coffee and then purged the...

    Annual CO2 Usage

Yeah if I go 20# and I think I'll need portability I'll go this route (assuming the tank is compatible...) I don't imagine I'll need portability very often though, and on the occasion I do buying a SodaStream isn't the end of the world.

    Annual CO2 Usage

As long as it's not significantly more expensive, this is the way it ought to be done. If people are going to use it for food, just use food "grade" for everything. But I really know nothing about this so my opinion is worth about as much... This is great info thanks! I've heard the aluminum...

    Annual CO2 Usage

It probably makes no difference, but I'd rather not take the chance to save a few bucks.

    Annual CO2 Usage

I found a brewery in said big city that is offering #20 food grade CO2 swaps for $100. I'm thinking this is a good idea, so long as I can find a used tank they will accept for a decent price. Thanks gents!

    Annual CO2 Usage

This is my understanding as well. I may very well want to carb with CO2, but I don't mind using sugar either if it makes sense to preserve CO2. I suppose I could always force carb in an "emergency"...

    Annual CO2 Usage

I find this to be the case quite often in Canada... Not sure if it's excessive regulations, or just the reality of a smaller market size but there are many examples here where a product/service just cannot be found. The LHBS here is run out of the guy's house. He's expressed interest in...
