Micro picking machine for hobby growers

Not yet, but I'll likely update it as summer rolls around and picking season approaches. The big change I would like to make is to remove (most of) the current enclosure. At the time, I had to make it big enough to be stable, but it's bulky to move around and a pain to store when not in use...

*advice needed* Hops exploding with life, I'm a bit overwhelmed!

The easiest thing to do would be to whack them all - then train the next few that pop up. If you do leave some of the originals, be sure to cut out the larger ones - these are the bulls. They are hollow, put out less cones, and easily snap.

    Growing hops from seed

Okay, since we're on a neomex kick :) Here are some sprouted from seeds found near Pueblo, CO. They were sent to me from some awesome high school students who found the mother plant vigorously growing up the side of a canyon. Included a pic of the mom and cones. I actually sprouted these last...

    Hop analysis

I used to recommend AlphaAnalytics, but then "the big boys" (Yakima Chief/Hopunion) changed their policy and stopped accepting outside samples. Here are some other options, but I can't vouch for any of them yet: http://blogs.ifas.ufl.edu/sumterco/2018/02/05/430/

2nd Year hops starting to put off shoots...what do I do now?

^ Lots of assumptions going on there - so, let me give you a little background. While not the size of the large commercial farms up in Yakima, I do manage 4 small hop yards. In total, we're talking 1000+ plants. Some have been in the ground 15+ years with no root trimming and are still at top...

2nd Year hops starting to put off shoots...what do I do now?

On mature plants, trimming back the bull shoots is very beneficial. The bulls are hollow and have further node spacing - meaning that they snap easily and produce less cones overall. However, you need to first judge how mature you plant is. If she was small last year and didn't put off cones, I...

    Growing hops from seed

That is correct. You can roll back this thread a ways, but the TLDR is: After much trial and error, I collected viable pollen from a highly stressed Magnum. These cones are from those original crosses. Since then, I have been working with 2nd and 3rd generation crossed, as well as pollen from...

    Growing hops from seed

That is correct. As is 042. When they say hops are extremely heterozygous, it is no joke.

    Growing hops from seed

As mentioned, we've been brewing up micro batches with the experimental hops to test their true flavors/aromas. Only part way through, but lots of what you might expect: pine, citrus and floral notes. Then, we hit upon something a bit more unique... The smash batch of 042 (left) vs 025 (right)...

    Growing hops from seed

No seeds in these ladies. I'm still collecting seeds from a second yard, but those are left on the bine as long as possible - then collected by hand.

    New hop varieties

They have also released some "Select" varieties. Looks like you'll need to be a commercial farmer, GLH associate member, and obtain a license from GHL to grow these... Paradigm™ Herbal, Stone fruit, Tropical, Spice, Melon, Candy, Bright Alpha Acids: 8 - 10.2% Beta Acids: 3.9 - 4.6% 5lbs 12oz...

    New hop varieties

To start things off, Great Lakes Hops just released 10 new varieties in their "Heritage collection". At the moment it looks like they are available to everyone for preorder: GLH Arcadian™ Light Floral and Orange/Tangerine Alpha: 9.8% Beta: 7.5% Observed First year yield (on test plant): 6lbs...

    New hop varieties

We may be entering a new renaissance when it comes to hop varieties! As many of you know, I have my own experimental breeding program going on - but, I'm also always interested to learn about any new hops entering the market. So, I thought I'd start up a thread to document new one as they...

    Growing hops from seed

The 2018 harvest was a blast. Way more cones to deal with, so we put together a micro hop stripper. Worked like a charm. Our experimental yard was harvest in a matter of hours (instead of days like 2017). Since then, we've been brewing up batches to get a better feel for the flavor profile of...

    Hops and Bugs...

Lots of small green/grey bugs? Sound like aphids - they are really common and it won't matter if a few stick around when you brew. Next year there are several organic ways to reduce the number of aphids (and the damage they cause): Strip the lower leaves on from the bine Introduce/encourage...

    Hops under cottonwood tree

As others have stated, hops are quite happy to grow up trees and other natural structures. I have a chinook that often "jumps" from the top of the 20' trellis to a nearby pine. It will happily go another 20' up the tree. The only issue I have seen, is an increase of aphids in the upper sections...

    Infestation

It's not healthy for the plants and will decrease your yield, but... no, it's not a problem to consume the hops. Next year, you might want to consider introducing some ladybugs. They will take care of the aphid problem really quick. When stressed, some hop varieties will throw male flowers (on...

    Infestation

Aphids. That honeybee is likely going after the honeydew they produce. It looks pretty bad, but you can still use the hops for brewing. Hit them with a hose to spray off the cones. Any remaining aphids will exit as the cones dry. Also you seem to have some male flowers forming. Is that Cascade?

    Growing hops from seed

At least hear in the PNW, you can pre-order fresh hops in the fall from local home brew stores. These are essentially cones picked from local farms in the last 24 hours.

Micro picking machine for hobby growers

It's actually surprisingly safe... no, really. The picking fingers are slower than they appear in the video - only about 3 rotations per second. This combined with the slope of the fingers means that you can "safely" place your hand against them without major issue. As a basic safety measure, I...
