DIY Basic Hop Trellis For Under $100

@mrgrimm101, "Would you suggest just 1 on each post, or 2 on each post, spread apart?" The easiest would be a wire from the ground, up around the 4x4 and back down to the ground (so, 2 wires next to each other). You can then use a "twitch stick" to tension it. Having the wires spread apart...

DIY Basic Hop Trellis For Under $100

Well done! This being the interweb though, I feel the need to critique. 1) I'd have recommended placing the 2x4 on the outside of the post. The way you have it now the tension is acting on the screws. On the outside, it the tension would be pulling it tighter into the post. 2) "and if I'm...

    Growing hops from seed

Finally completed the new yard and moved the hops outside. Still need to set strings and complete the drip system. Attached is a panorama looking down the hill from up the hill. Now for the waiting game to see if anything interesting develops.

what does your hop yard set look like

This set up is at a friends house. They are 16' 4x4's set 40' apart. They are for our hop breeding experiments, so maxing height is not critical. Attached is a panorama looking down from the porch. At my place, I have a single 30' run that uses 20' 4x6's set 3' in the ground. The post holes...

    Cut back first bines?

The trick here is judging when your plants are "mature". For the first year, let everything grow. This allows the plant to capture lots of sun and build up it's stores in the rhizome. For the same reason, I recommend not cutting the bines down in the fall, until they are completely dead...

what does your hop yard set look like

Here's one we just set up yesterday. 3 x 40' rows on a slope that gets great sun.

    Cut back first bines?

Actually, on mature plants, you should do the exact opposite. The first 3-4 strongest are the most likely to be "bull" bines. They are huge, but hollow and often snap later in the season. They also tend do have more spacing between the nodes - meaning less side arms - meaning less hops.

    Growing hops from seed

Quick update. There are 80 healthy seedlings that have really taken off. Most are outgrowing their 3' bamboo posts and will need to be moved outside in the next 2 weeks. We're starting on the new hop yard this weekend. In the meantime, I have to deal with a sudden breakout of aphids. A few...

    Sorachi Ace (Found it!)

So... I received a notification from the Thyme Garden that they were not able to secure the Ace rhizomes after all. However, I did find them at Freshops. Yesterday a good looking rhizome arrived.

    Rope/twine advice

Thanks for reminding me that I needed to pick up some twine! I don't have a tractor supply nearby, so I looked on ebay and found this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/151603897535 Hasn't been delivered yet, so fingers crossed that it will work. The single ply makes me nervous.

Please do. We have a serious shortage in the mountains. There will likely be drought conditions this summer.

    Growing hops from seed

Speaking of pots: mine are quickly starting to outgrow their containers. I'll need to get them outside sooner than later. I've had a great offer for a yard to use. Full sun, good soil, access to irrigation. The only problem is that it is on a steep slope...

2015 : Anyone have their hops growing yet?

Then, I am really confused. Hops only have one leaf per petiole (the part that attaches the leaves to the stem/bine). Those seem to have 3. Maybe there has been some bug damage that is confusing me, but really, it appears to be a very young raspberry sprout.

2015 : Anyone have their hops growing yet?

Are you sure that is a hops sprout? Kind of hard to tell from the pic, but the leaves look off and there seem to be thorns. Maybe I just need more coffee...

PapaBearJay, Love it! Do you move them to individual pots soon - or- right into the ground? There have to be 50+ in that pic.

    Growing hops from seed

Just a quick update. About 100 seeds have germinated. 50 have been potted up. As observed in previous years, some of the new plants thrive while others struggle or wilt (even with the same parents and growing conditions). Two of the Mt Hood crosses germinated, but neither lasted long.
