Irish Red Ale Irish Red (1st place HBT comp)

Ok, so I've screwed this 'experiment' up already. I have purchased the Vienna, crystal and rstd from different places (Lhbs for one batch, NB for the other) and for some insane reason I inadvertently added an extra lb of Maris otter to the grain bill. Here's what I'm thinking: Add 5 more lbs...

Official 2011 "Pay It Foward" Thread

I always thought the concept of paying it forward was selfless giving, in hopes that the receiver does the same. It's not about need. Random acts of kindness. Rich giving to poor is charity. Man giving to man is mankind. It seems that quite a few of the givers are new to the hobby/obsession...

How long have you been brewing 5 gallon batches??

Won't either be sufficient for a 10 gal boil? Get the better product. I've been brewing for less than a year now and would hate to get rid of my 7 gal BK, but I want to move on to BIGGER and better things!

    Question about DME

Here's the conversion factor: 1# grain = .67#dme = .75#lme To convert between the two: LME * .89 = DME DME * 1.1 = LME Substitute as you need. Some people choose one or the other due to preference, some just like whole numbers. And by that I mean, sometimes when building a recipe it calls for...

    Question about DME

Basically, the difference is the water content. You will need less dme than you would lme. If you are trying to lower srm, add the dme toward the end of the boil.

I cant get my fridge to 55

Step- if swmbo catches me running the fridge with the door open, I can't even imagine what would happen! Daytripper- thanks, that helped soo much! The fridge is in the basement. But it is definitely not below 66 degrees there. And if you've ever worked in a restaurant, you know that a...

I'm trying to ferment a brew with yeast, recipe says to ferment at the low end of the strain tolerance, which is 55. I have digital temp controller hooked up to my fridge, but it holds steady at 47-48. Any suggestions? Wish I had a ferm heater

    Tweak my recipe

Yeah, sorry. The biggest criticisms were that the ginger not necessarily overpowered everything else, but definitely covered it. One judge suggested more malt flavor (a brewer whom I respect, in fact jut won the pilsner urquell competition). Ive only brewed about 10-12 batches, he last 2 being...

    Tweak my recipe

Just got back some score sheets from a recent competition, and one said I had the beginnings if a great beer, just need to tweak the recipe. It was a cream ale kit from NB that I added fresh ginger to. Recipe is : 6lb Pilsen dme, 4 oz biscuit malt, 12 oz honey malt, 1oz cluster at 60 minutes...
