    Home Brewer TV #40

I noticed a few weeks ago that new episodes weren't coming out. He doesn't list a reason why, just states that it was cancelled. I'm so sad 

    Thames Valley II Diacetyl rest

Just took a reading. I tend to not take a reading until I wanna make a move. Call it lazy, call it cautious. It's at 1.012. Call it done. I brewed on 7/6 so it's been 9 days. I taste no diacetyl, but there was a very slight slickness on the tongue. But it is warm and flat, and I have been drinking.

    Thames Valley II Diacetyl rest

I recently made an English bitter with Thames Valley II and Wyeast suggests a diacetyl rest with this yeast. It's been in the primary for 8 days now. I was wondering if I could throw it into the fridge and start to chill it while still doing a rest, like setting it at 65, dropping it to 60...

    Adding things to secondary

I brewed 5 gallons of cream ale, and I'm gonna split it up into 1-gallon test batches. I plan on adding jalapeño, habanero, and fresh ginger root. The peppers have been roasted and frozen. I would rather not boil any of it to keep the flavor the same. Should I soak in vodka? How long? Are the...

    Yeast Washing Illustrated

I had the exact same situation with the same strain. It cleared up eventually. Doesn't really matter what's on top anyway. It what's on bottom.

    Yeast Washing Illustrated

The water gives the yeast a clean place to ‘hang out’ while all the trub falls out. It has been sanitized by the boil. Also, if you plan to store the yeast, the boil removes oxygen, so your beasties will sleep. Yes. The intention is to essentially leave you with just yeast. There will...

Here's an Idea for a Beer Entrepreneur

My brewing software has that. It's called suggest-a-beer. It takes what you have listed in inventory, compares it the recipes you have and suggests a beer, even tells you that this it that is needed. I haven't had occasion to use it yet, as buy a lot of kits.

What do you love/hate about your LHBS??

    All I heard was ****s.

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

Like I said, mine won't pull a vortex down with 1L in a 2L flask. But it works. It's a stirplate, not a tornado-maker. To preserve the beauty of your stirplate, maybe you could find the thinnest piece of plexiglas to put over the top. Or if you are handy enough, place an insert just in the...

What do you love/hate about your LHBS??

Great stuff guys and girls!!! I am a fan of Brewmaster’s recipe builder. Having computers can also give people a shot at using different programs before they buy. My fav lhbs has 2 mills - and the sign says if you don’t know how to adjust it, don’t. But otherwise, feel free! Also, most...

What do you love/hate about your LHBS??

I am in the (long) process of opening a home brew store. I am looking for some things you like about your LHBS, and especially things you don’t like. I want to have the basics - a lot of grains; variety of extracts; large assortment of equipment; parts; maybe service (convert a keg, add a...

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

That's a nice box!! I like that you cut the top for less resistance (I'm assuming), but it gives the opportunity for stuff to get in should your starter explode. I've got mine wired a bit different. The hot from the fan is on the right terminal, the hot from the plug is on the center, and the...

    Restaurant grade sanitizer

What are anal pearls? Share your extensive knowledge with us. After checking the MSDS, Oasis Multi-quat sanitizer Is an ammonium-based sanitizer. We use it on stainless all day long with no pitting, so I didn't think it had bleach in it. And it's ready to use with no rinsing. I don't like...

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

I'm using a 12v 1.25A supply. It won't pull a vortex to the bottom of my 2L flask on high. Have you put some water in your flask and tried it out? If it works with the lower power supply, use it. Keep the other supply for your next project!

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

Try taking out the center magnet, and make sure the other two have opposite poles facing up (I’m sure they do, but ya never know). That way the middle magnet isn’t trying to pull on either end of the stirrer. If you need more strength, stack the magnets. You say you did install a rheostat...

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

Does it throw the bar with the rheostat all the way down? Maybe you need to move the fan closer to the surface of your flask. Reposition the magnet/s to the length of your stirbar. Make sure the magnets are centered on the fan Get stronger magnets.
