    Wyeast 1338 / WLP011 Experiences?

Better late than never I suppose, I'm going to resurrect this. I did try this, but it was with a wheat beer, with favorable results. Did you ever try your scotch ale?

Bottles, and swing top bottle washers with sour beer

Well then, seems that I'm not as clean as I thought. Back to the forums...

Bottles, and swing top bottle washers with sour beer

Ok, but are you doing sours as well?

Bottles, and swing top bottle washers with sour beer

I know that when you make (or accidentally make) a sour that the hard plastics can be sanitized (although I don't take that chance) while the softer plastics cannot be 100% disinfected once they come in contact with the bacteria. What about the rubber washers on swing top bottles? I assume...

Weird question, but I'm in the middle of a 'forced experiment'...

Thanks for the link, I'll be sure to check it out. I'm probably suffering from a lack of knowledge base on the program, but it still seems like you're barking up the right tree. Weird though, as I went through my notes I noticed that I only collected approximately 5 gallons in my first...

Weird question, but I'm in the middle of a 'forced experiment'...

Good to know Denny! I've seen you on here sir, so I'm honored you took the time to help me out with this. :mug: Followed the directions, and it seems like you're probably right. I have Pre-Boil volume of 6.5, and have a set efficiency of 84% (Whiiiiiiiich I should probably change) Pre boil...

Weird question, but I'm in the middle of a 'forced experiment'...

Well, because that was just the school of thought that I was brought up in I suppose. The basic idea was just to check and make sure. In my earlier experience some of the recipes call for 60 min mashes, however I noted that I didn't have as full of a conversion as if I went for 90 min. I just...

Weird question, but I'm in the middle of a 'forced experiment'...

So how do you ensure that your conversion is complete...or do you at all?

Weird question, but I'm in the middle of a 'forced experiment'...

I will have to check that when I get home, however it's totally possible that I could have screwed something up in Beersmith, I've only just recently been starting to use it. If this is the case, then it would make sense I suppose.

Weird question, but I'm in the middle of a 'forced experiment'...

Wow, must have missed this one. I'm going to have to go back and look into that. (...and the knowledge base keeps growing...)

Weird question, but I'm in the middle of a 'forced experiment'...

Yes, it was white wheat malt. I've worked through about 75% of the 50lb bag I purchased, this was the first time I had an issue.

Weird question, but I'm in the middle of a 'forced experiment'...

That's a good suggestion, which is why I'm in the process of obtaining a pH meter, FINALLY. Here's the recipe I used: 14 lbs White Wheat Malt 8 lbs Pale Malt (2Row American) 1 lbs Crystal 40L 8 oz Carared 8 oz Honey Malt Nearly a pound of rice hulls I mashed this in with 162F...

Weird question, but I'm in the middle of a 'forced experiment'...

Oh, trust me, I tried! I'm definitely of the adventurous type, but with that much grain on the line I think anyone would have given it a shot. Honestly, I never got a full conversion, and I think it would be quite a bit more accurate to say that it probably never converted at all. The wort that...

    Grain education reference...

Thanks. Will do when it's available again.

Weird question, but I'm in the middle of a 'forced experiment'...

Yes, which is what I think might have happened. My question is more specifically related to the additional grain that I added to the mash for the second round, wouldn't that add more enzymes to the mash and result in a second conversion? Or, would the temperature somehow affect the...

    Grain education reference...

That's great, I appreciate it. I'm not really interesting in the agricultural, more so the actual usage and such. I appreciate it. Any knowledge on some less scientific/technical publications that would focus more on just the different types of malts and the characteristics and differences? Or...

Weird question, but I'm in the middle of a 'forced experiment'...

Was trying parti-gyle, not for the first time but did experience something new. Didn't even come close to my predicted OG. Added some more grain to the second run, as scheduled, and now I'm not getting a complete conversion (via the iodine test). Is it possible that I could have brought the...

    Grain education reference...

I've been looking for a bit now on a book that helps break down the aspects of grain in the way that "Yeast: The Practical Guide to Fermentation" and "For the Love of Hops" do for their respective categories. I have high hopes for the one on Water as well, however I have heard nothing about one...

I second that, just got some myself.

Boil off 1 gallon batch vs. 10

It will matter in a sense that your target OG will change in relation to the size batch you're making. The less water in the batch, the more significant your error will be. Sounds like your setup works well with your 10 gallon boil, and at least you're paying attention. Maybe turn down the...
