    Getting frustrated...

@boydster - that's what I was hoping on too... @SoCalHomeBrew - I am using an 8 gallon pot, so I can easily do the 6+ gallons up front. I have another 2 gallon pot that I could/should heat up for a sparge. I will need to mark off "levels" I guess, since the pot doesn't have a glass window to...

    Getting frustrated...

@brew703 - I started with 5.0gal - I think this is where I'm going wrong. @LLBeanJ - I took my measurement AFTER I added the 1.5 gal. Maybe I didn't mix enough? @booster01 - The sparge water is where I think I'm losing my mind... I did NOT add additional water of any higher temps. I just...

    Getting frustrated...

Ok - I'm confused - sorry for the ignorance - but I've seem some threads that are referring to first runnings, etc. when talking about BIAB? I've done 2 BIABs so far. My second one (done yesterday) seems to be "OK" so far. But I think I'm screwing something up - because my numbers were low for...

    Thoughts on this grain bill...

When I spoke to them on the phone - I asked - did you mill it already? When they said yes - I said - ok, thanks... and asked here what y'all thought I could do with the incoming grain bill. They were gracious enough to do so...

    Thoughts on this grain bill...

Well, as I posted my last post - the guys from the company I ordered from just got back to me... they redid my order separating everything into individual grained bags... txbrewing.com. They basically ate the cost of my screw up or someone is going to brew some concoction later this week...? :D

    Thoughts on this grain bill...

Man, those are some good ideas... glad I posted. I know it sounds crazy but I hadn't even thought to add more base malts to get to my originally projected numbers. I was so pissed with myself for screwing up the order I didn't think my option through. I had originally intended to brew the IPA...

    Thoughts on this grain bill...

I just placed an order but I didn't realize that if I didn't specify different grain bills, the entire order will be milled together. So, I am about to get a 23# grain will with the following in one bag: 20# Pale Ale Malt 1# Briess Carapils 1# Briess Caramel 80L 1# Briess Caramel 60L...

When do you use a blow off tube?

Anytime I use S04 - the beastie yeastie! Especially on anything with an OG of 1.050/+! You are most likely going to get a big krausen.

    bottling directly from fermenter?

I did when I only had 1 carboy, now that I have a few - I tend to rack first then bottle.

    First BIAB reflections and questions...

Have a wee look at that lads! Not sure how explosive (like S04) Edinburgh yeast is supposed to be... but that's looking lovely!

    First BIAB reflections and questions...

Double crushing - great idea! Next time I will get that done, I didn't this time except for the 2lbs of toasted which I crushed by hand! And I did press the bag, to get all the sugars I could... - I was able to start my "mash" with about 7 gallons. So I didn't add any water after mashing. I did...

    First BIAB reflections and questions...

Morning brewers, I brewed an 80 /- Scottish Ale this weekend. First time I attempted an all-grain/BIAB brew, so I was concerned with the whole process, but I forgot what think may be an important step. I'll give you my ingredients and steps and am curious for your feedback... The following was...

    What could have happened?

Alright boys, just to close the loop - and thanks again for the feedback... Here's a pic from this morning 11:10EST. Starting working last night - krausen forming - but like others have said - nothing as crazy as S-04! S-05 by Sean Tierney, on Flickr KatoBaggins - same here! I used it on a...

    What could have happened?

Thanks for the feedback boys... I guess I'm used to the wild fermentation of S-04, it seems to be what I used most... To watch the S-05 (which I have used in the past) react so slowly in a side by side comparison just seemed odd... I honestly was expecting some form of reaction by now - which is...

    What could have happened?

Alright brewers... Weird one here... Yesterday I brewed 2 Irish Red Ales... One a kit for a friend (brewed at 3:30p) and a self-designed one (brewed at 6:30p). The kit used Safale-05, mine used Safale-04... not that this should have mattered. As you can see in the kit ale, a trub seemed to have...

    Should I re-pitch?

I woke up this morning and there was a minimal amount of activity. There was a small evidence of a krausen, but no real activity, so I re-pitched with Safale US-04. After about 3 hours, I'm seeing proper bubbling within the airlock. Fingers crossed!

    Should I re-pitch?

I'm an idiot and didn't take a reading. But it was pretty warm to the touch. I guess i got impatient since i planned two brews.

    Should I re-pitch?

I brewed two batches yesterday - an IPA and an amber ale. The amber is bubbling away nicely with a nice krausen across the top - but the IPA is just sitting there - no bubbles - no krausen. I think it might have been too warm when I pitched, should I wait a day or so and if nothing happens...

    No head on my Stout

Is flaked barley added in the boil - similar to Irish Moss?
