    Started question

That is an excellent question, a yeast starter should not be greater than 1.040 as the gravity would be to great for the yeast to handle and would defeat the purpose!

False Bottom not flush to sides of mash kettle

Does the FB sit on the floor of the kettle and is just not meeting up flush with the kettle wall?

    Started question

That's an interesting thought, i'm not entirely sure if there are any issues with the size of the fermentor and the amount of space that volume size would take up, however since there is more surface area the oxygen exchange ratio might be greater which would be could for yeast. My only comment...

I just drove to a near by brewery and asked if they had any decommissioned kegs for sale and they brought me a palate and said 30 bucks a piece take what you want.

    2" vs. 4" RTD probe

Is this for a rims chamber? If so I ended up using a 4inch after using 2 reducers from the T.

    tips for my first brew

What i've learned is, don't take your first brew to seriously. Just relax and have fun follow the instructions on the kit and enjoy the experience. You are bound to mess up one thing like pushing the airlock in to hard and forcing the rubber grommet to fall into your wort. We've all done it...

San Star Question....am I sanitizing wrong???

You are correct, as long as you follow the proper dilution procedure there is no need to worry about the risk of poison. I believe the dilution i use i 1.25 gallons for every quarter of an oz of starsan or 5 gals for 1 oz starsan. Don't be afraid to mix up a 5 gal batch, it keeps for a long...

San Star Question....am I sanitizing wrong???

Nope, no need to rinse. Don't fear the foam :)

    sanitizing

One other method if the foam scares you is to wait until you've added all the water you're going to use to add the starsan, this will greatly reduce the amount of foam you get. Me.... I love the foam it assures me that i am getting contact with the sanitizer in all the hidden naked to the eye...

Do yourself a favor, get a refractormeter to replace your hydrometer

If you read the manual on the refractometer it says to allow the sample to sit on the device window for 30 seconds before taking a reading to allow the ATC to function properly. Also the ATC is only good for a temp range of 45 - 90 degrees F if i recall correctly. When dealing with a few drops...

Fast Clean Fermentation - I guess that's good?

Sounds like fermentation took place, i've had a few that produced a light krausen. I'd just snap the lid back on and leave it for another 3 weeks, don't even bother with secondary. :mug:

    Really strange fermentation readings

Might be poor choice of wording, i just figured since i was posting figures in brix and SG it would be obvious i was talking about 2 different readings one from refractometer and one from hydrometer. I know what a refractometer measures ;-) I just find it hard to believe that the 2 figures...
