    Stir Bar wandering off

There are a couple of important things to keep in mind when building your stirplate. 1) when using multiple magnets make sure you orient the poles opposite to the one sitting across from it. 2) for best results take the stirbar you plan to use and use it as a guide for spacing the magnets...

Fermentation +10 (or more) degrees - whoa

Depends on your standards, if you just want beer to drink then nope it'll still be beer. If you want something that'll knock the socks off judges at competition then i'd probably pass on this one, drinking it of course while figuring out a better more reliable fermentation plan. For me...

    Large Quantity Brewing

Not sure anything about this is going to be cheap. It's going to cost you 4-6 times more in incredients, unless your planning on partial boils you will need large enough kettles and mashtuns. I've seen 20 gallon foodsafe buckets at hbs for about 50 dollars, i believe most online shops do aswell.

    my first starter

Any starter is better than no starter provided you are not over pitching and you are sanitary. I only decant after 2L in a 5 gal batch because at that point the starter is consisting of at least 10% of your finished beer witch is enough to bother me. That isnt to say i wouldnt ever do it, it...

    Starter versus multiple wyeast packs

Nope it will be the same as making an appropriate sized starter, but will tack on 25 dollars in cost in yeast to your brew unless you got a really good price. This of course has no affect on taste. sorry 19 dollars since you will need atleast one packet.

    my first starter

Foam stopper is perfect, even tinfoil will work. I think most people will agree 24 hours is prime time to pitch if you don't want to decant, if you want to cold crash and decant 24-36 hours then to the fridge for 24-48 hrs depending on the yeast. Extra light dme is perfect for starters, and...

First all grain batch tomorrow, have a few questions

I personally think gravity is more important than final volume. I don't batch sparge but in the vids i've seen the water is poured in, stirred an vourloffed. Sent from my iPhone using HB Talk

Heavy fermentation w/in 12 hours, but now no head at 48 hours

No need to worry krausen will rise and fall sometimes so fast you won't even see it. There is no need to secondary if your not doing anything special like racking on fruit or dry hopping. Just leave it in the primary for 3-4 weeks then bottle or keg. Sent from my iPhone using HB Talk

    Jamil's Brewing Classic Styles

Excellect! that was my initial expectation but when i threw it together in beer tools pro the numbers were no where near what his recipe was showing. I however forgot his were formulated with an assumed 70% efficiency so after scaling it for my efficiency everything lined back up. Thanks all...

    Jamil's Brewing Classic Styles

I'm a bit confused and it doesn't seem to be specified as a guideline in the book, so I was wondering if anybody with this book could shed some light on my question. Page 71 has a recipe for a Marzen and is listed for a Partial Mash with an All-Grain option. In the partial mash there is a...

    Problem with Wort Chiller

Try using a SS or copper scrubby to filter the trub out of your chiller. Works for me everytime! You can find them at any walmart or target in the cleaning section.

    Temperature Problem

82 is a little warm for pitching but not to the point of killing yeast so you should be fine. Fermentation generates heat during it's process usually around 3-5 degrees, so during the active stages you be hard pressed to keep it around ambient temps, i wouldnt stick it outside but maybe closer...

    developing spice notes

It's probably best to just read through a list of yeast profiles dry or liquid to determine the characteristics your looking for, and decide based on that. The yeast that comes with the kit should provide a flavor profile in the description but i suppose it might not. Did this kit say you...

I think you would be able to sense that already, not sure if that yeast is known for producing a spicey note?
