Today was supposed to be my first AG batch too. Last night I decided not to buy the grains and hops until I did a "dry run" with plain water. I ran into much the same problems, and was so disappointed. No beer today. Don't get too discouraged though. I'm sure it will work out better next time.
I did an extract oatmeal stout a little over a month ago. I followed the advice of my LHBS owner and used the Brewers Best Irish Stout kit, but I threw in 1lb of oatmeal during the steeping process. When I racked it to the secondary, I drank the S.G. sample and it was awesome. When I bottled two...
Ok, I'm finnaly getting my all-grain brewery underway. I've seen several different options of lautering to include: SS Braids, Phils false bottoms, and slotted pipes. Any preference on which is the best, or are they all about the same? thanks
A little warning about oxyclean. I had a bunch of bottles to delabel, so I put them in a tub of oxyclean and water, then got busy and left them there about a week and a half. The labels came off great, but there was a funny crystal-like subsance all over the bottles inside and out. It came...
I've finally got some kegs for converting to kettles, but I have one question. Should I attach the spigots with welding, or some sort of threaded set up with gaskets?
I'm right there with you trick. I'm ready to get started in AG, but still looking for the best set up. There seems to be a lot of ways to skin a cat. I'll be watching this thread closely too for any advise.
Thanks for the advise. I went ahead and racked to the secondary. Also took the S.G. while I was at it, and drank the S.G. Sample. This will be my best beer yet!!
I had a question about using secondary fermentation. I was going to try it for the first time with my oatmeal stout, but after reading more about using a secondary, I'm finding that it's really more for lagering. Would it be worth it to give it a try, or would it be a waste of time? I have not...
I got a good thermometer from my homebrew store for about $15. It goes from about freezing to 220 F. The thing I like most is that unlike a candy thermometer, it is good in the lower temperature ranges. The first time I brewed, I used a candy thermometer that only went as low as 100 F and I...
Thanks Wild and Waldo for the advice on aging temps and extract kits. I'll be careful where I store my beer. I think I'll try to find that Northern Brewer brand. Of course I've been very pleased with BB, and hope to move on to AG some day.

Just curious, should beer be aged in a certain temperature range. I've been keeping my beer at about 72 degrees F during fermentation and for a couple weeks after bottling for carbination. But if I want to age the beer for a while, will it hurt if I put it in the garage where the temperature...
Here is a link to a website with instructions on making a wort chiller. I plan to make one myself pretty soon. Hope the link works. I'm new to this whole forum stuff.
Quick question, I just brewed my first batch of beer last Wednesday night. I learned a lot of things just from that first batch, and hopefully won't repeat the same mistakes twice. But one thing I did wrong was pitch the yeast before taking the specific gravity. Does this really matter. I...
