Interesting note on Auto Siphons and Cleaning...

So I recently had to toss my mini auto siphon I purchased from Northern Brewer back in May. I was noticing fissures/cracks on the bend at the top and the rubber ring on the bottom of the internal tube had deteriorated. The rubber had actually come off and left a small ring inside. Needless to...

    Bottle or let it ride?

Hit the wrong button before finishing (long day at the office). I've used a kit from the same company as Oyarsa, and let it ride for 4-5 weeks, no problem. I actually just pulled a few bottles out from where I left them to condition. Popped a few open and they may have over-carbed. The pop...

    Bottle or let it ride?

I am slowly starting to come around to going away from glass.

    Hose Cleaning/Sanitizing

So I ran hot water through two of my hoses last night and then twirled them above my head. Already see a difference! As for sanitizer, I use StarSan. 15+ years ago when I was in scouts, iodine tablets were what we used to purify water (someone lost the dip hose to our hand pump filter...)...

    Hose Cleaning/Sanitizing

Works for me! Just was interesting as I had other hoses not do that; just this particular blow off hose.

    Hose Cleaning/Sanitizing

Hopefully I am not beating a dead horse with this thread, but had a few question on best practices for cleaning and sanitizing hoses. I use the clear hoses for everything from blow-off to transfer (no longer to secondary, though, after going through this forum!). My process is to rinse with...

    Bottling Issue Very Little Carbonation

Can you provide some additional info? Like what you used for priming, how it was stored, etc.? I haven't tried the 500ml swing-tops, but I had a friend have issues with those specifically. I think it was a bad top or something like that, but not 100% sure.

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

After doing a few 5 gallon batches before taking a break due to moving, I came back with the decision to start with 1 gallon extract kits. I've done 4 so far with good results. I like seeing a thread here for those that enjoy 1 gallon, or maybe can only do 1 gallon (2 or 3 as well not to leave...

Funny things you've overheard about beer

I need to remember this when my wife asks what that is when she sees my carboys in the pantry, mainly to justify my other expensive hobby (firearms)

A photo story - Colorado Basement Brewery

That is awesome! Makes me almost wish to be back in Fort Collins instead of DFW. Almost... I highly recommend going over to the CSU student center and checking out the bar and teaching brewery they have set up. Not sure if they give tours, but I do believe they have student produced craft...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Brewed up a Holiday Red on Sunday using some new (to me) techniques. Probably one of my better brew days, too. The 60 degree morning temps also made it easier to stand outside with the kettle.

    Odells Isolation Ale Clone

Really odd that I stumbled on this thread today. I was talking with a coworker about going to CSU's on campus bar while I was there and the bartender mixed Isolation with some cranberry beer (maybe it was a lambic?) that was called Franzen or something. She called the mixture Franzilation...

    beer bottling

It almost looks like one of those root beer bottles you can get with a root beer kit, just not brown. The only thing clear bottles would be good for is a Mexican style beer, like a Corona or Landshark lager clone. I personally haven't tried it as I'm not a big fan of that style. Maybe someday...

Fizz Drops vs. Priming sugar- Any Difference?

I have it in bottles now.

Fizz Drops vs. Priming sugar- Any Difference?

Couple months late to this post, but I had the same question. Northern Brewer loves to throw these things in their 1 Gallon Kits. I have a Chinook IPA from them currently in bottle conditioning that I plan to let sit a few more weeks (4-6 weeks total). I want to see what happens when you give...

Secondary Fermentation on 1 Gallon Batches

This is all very helpful. Moving forward, I plan to look into finnings (gelatin/Irish Moss). I had good results on my last 5 gallon batch with secondary, considering I scorched it and found burned residue in the trub. I do plan to go back to 5 gallon batches with what I find is enjoyable and...

Secondary Fermentation on 1 Gallon Batches

I've been mainly brewing one gallon batches as of late to A) Get better at the whole brewing process B) Try different styles and C) Reduce the impact 5 gallons has on my house/keep wife happy. My question relates to secondary fermentation. I've been transferring every batch to a secondary...

    Greetings from Hickory Creek

Afternoon everyone! I'm Mitch S. from Hickory Creek, TX (North Texas to make it easier). I started brewing in 2012. Due to my previous employer moving me around the US, my career as a homebrewer has spurted. I've been brewing kits, recently going from 5 gallon to 1 gallon since I consider...
