Perfect fan for stir plate build - with potentiometer - $5 shipped

Curious if a couple of these would work with a small 1" stir bar. http://www.homebrewing.org/Keeper-Magnet_p_4019.html

    Hunter's Basement E-Brewery Build

I think it would be dependent on the wall thickness. In my experience (I brewed in aluminum before this) the metal was quite soft. To get these weldless connections sealed well, you do have to wrench them down pretty hard. I'd be a little be leary that it might actually deform the kettle...

    Wyeast Smack Pack & Starter

I just recently used a Wyeast Smack Pack for the first time (had been using Whitelabs vials on the last few). I just broke the inner pack and poured everything into my starter vessel immediately. No need to wait 3 hrs to pour it, the yeast will be just fine in the starter as long as the...

    Hunter's Basement E-Brewery Build

I didn't keep very good notes on costs for this project, but I estimate (if you include the finishing work I did in the basement) that it was around 6k.

    Hunter's Basement E-Brewery Build

I bought a 'Regency' branded one from the: http://www.webstaurantstore.com/ It looks like they're running a special on them right now. If you find one that can be shipped via standard services (it'll say how it ships on the product page) their prices are pretty reasonable. Their...

    Hunter's Basement E-Brewery Build

I actually was curious about this, but even the quick-disconnects Kal recommends do not stop the flow when you disconnect them. That would make cleaning the hoses extremely difficult too, so probably best that they don't.

    Hunter's Basement E-Brewery Build

I have to confess, I was a straight Extract brewer before this system so I really didn't have experience trying to closely regulate a mash and sparge with non-automated equipment. Given the trouble we had holding a desired temperature in our steeping step back during the extract days, the...

How many gallons of homebrew in 2014?

    10 Gallons - Session APA 6483 + 10 = 6493

    Hunter's Basement E-Brewery Build

Gathered up some pictures of the first brewday for you guys to check out. We were pretty excited to get it fired up! First Crush, which looked a bit shredded to me: So, we regapped the mill and tried a bit more grain: Prepping one of the fermenters for the wort, in requisite safety...

    SS quick disconects

No, they are not. Neither CamLocks, nor the Spring Sleeved Version. Both male and female sides will allow liquid to pass as soon as they are disconnected.

    Hunter's Basement E-Brewery Build

Thanks Huaco, I was doing some reading and I'm thinking the same thing. Found a few others complaining of similar performance concerns when trying to chill the batch quickly to prevent those off flavors.

    Stainless 12.5 - 15 gallon Conical Fermenter

    Found one, thanks for looking.

    Hunter's Basement E-Brewery Build

If I end up only drawing beer from above the trub layers in both of these fermenters I'm looking at roughly a gallon and a half of loss. Since the conical is designed for this purpose, I suspect loss difference will be negligible. As always, I'll be sure to share the results. Lots of...

    Hunter's Basement E-Brewery Build

Some good thoughts, I think next time around we'll be running it into a Conical anyway, so I'll let cold break settle, dump off the trub and then pitch. Already went this far, may as well get the conical rocking too :) Here's a pic of the beer fermenting this afternoon, got some nice clean...

Brew Bucket by SS Brewing Technologies

My brew bucket has significant marring all the way around the upper lip just below the rolled metal (deep scratches) which haven't affected it's use. They appear to be caused by either the polishing process, or the machine that rolled the lip. I also had black polishing compound to clean, but...

    Hunter's Basement E-Brewery Build

Once the mash started circulating, I knew we were in better shape and I was able to breathe a little, hahah. My next conundrum is figuring out how to filter out the extra junk in the finished wort from the boil kettle. We used all pelleted hops this time around and no hop bags, so next...

    Hunter's Basement E-Brewery Build

I re-gapped the Cereal Killer to .46 (which sounds huge!!) but seemed to give me a nice cracked grain with the husks still in decent shape. We found at .42 it was essentially shredding the husks. A couple of notes, we started mash re-circulation very, very slowly and worked our way up to...

    Hunter's Basement E-Brewery Build

Just fired up the system with another 19lbs of grain. I re-gapped the mill as I think we were over-crushing the 2-row and Crystal yesterday. I'm much happier with the appearance of it today. We're going a slight bit less on the Oats and Corn, and I have a bag of Rice Hulls ready to toss in...

    Hunter's Basement E-Brewery Build

Thanks guys, Tomorrow I'm going to do a few things: -Start my recirculation at 1/3 of the valve open, rather than full bore. -Cut down the sticky bits (oats and corn) and sub in a bit more 2-row and Caramel -Add some Rice Hulls to the mash tun as well I'll be back reporting here for sure...
