    Fall Cider prices

Picked up 10 gallons for $50 in West MI for frozen cider. Prices will be going up to $6-7 gallon. Hill Bros estimates less than 15% production.

    Bottle bombs

Exploding glass bottles are definitely possible. I had to pick up glass fragments from 10 feet away after a fairly loud explosion. Great education on the need of stabilizer when back-sweetening cider.

Do you know how this worked?

Agree with weirdboy - looks like a jockey box.

    Reusing sanitiser

A chlorine-based sanitizer like VWP should retain it's effectiveness for a couple days under optimal conditions. Make sure you are are thoroughly cleaning soiled items and rinsing well after sanitizing. I haven't seen VWP locally but have used bleach before moving to a no-rinse sanitzer (Starsan).

Can i ferment beer after kegging?

Keg is fine. You may get some sentiment from the first couple pints after pouring but it will clear up.

    Homebrewer in Northern MI.

Welcome fellow MI Westcoaster! The TC area has many great breweries, cider mills and wineries. I wouldn't mind moving back in a few years.

Can i ferment beer after kegging?

It may not drop much lower depending on recipe and brewing factors. I've pulled a couple kegs of stout and triple back out an extra two weeks and it improved the flavor.

Homebrewing.org has $7.50 pin lock lids that DO fit ball locks. No prv.

    How to sanitize fruit/food items

Wineries don't even wash their grapes before pressing. Don't worry too much about it especially if additions are post-fermemtation.

    Stainless steel or aluminum kettle?

Aluminum hasn't caused any off-flavors for me. 30 qt size will cause more boilovers or smaller batches. I now use a 1/2 barrel keg for boiling and life is easier.

10 ways to brew bad beer

Brad Smith apparently has the craft down. I'll be crushing my grains tonight for next months "surprise funk ale" mash.

    Cider Classification

It's classified as wine in Michigan

    Twine or Wire, any difference?

Wire would not provide a sufficient texture unless there were horizontal "steps". I'll be using Sisal (Agave sisalana) twine for my first season. It looks thin so I'll triple up to be safe. Tent stakes for the bottom should work but is there anything better and cheaper?

Declaration 3/30 : Misquote Ben Franklin Day

In order to fly a kite in a storm tied to your privates one needs an unending supply of strong ale. This is proof that SWMBO must stop us if she loves us. - Benjamin Franklin

Is it just me? or do all ales taste better slightly below room temp

Draft is set for 40 and I let it set for 10 minutes. 50F seems about right for ales.

    Had my first explosion

No 2ndary. Just syphon to another and connect to gas. Easy.

    What are you drinking now?

    Founders Breakfast. Yum.

    Had my first explosion

If everyone uses a 1" tube to do the job we'd never see pics like this. Stainless is the way to go, hands down.

    Had my first explosion

That is another reason I'm scared of glass carboys. It's like the yeast has a mind of its own sometimes.
