Off Flavor - Could it be lactic acid?

I recently brewed a 10 Gallon all grain batch following the Cream of the Crop recipe. I used RO water and when entering the recipe into beersmith it recommended a 9.4ml lactic acid addition for the mash. I put in a little under 2 tablespoons to my mash water. I hit OG and FG just fine and the...

anyone use a quick carb motor to filter?

Kepler had a great question, how do you know when you have filtered the keg entirely? Is it that you have a good sense of how long it takes to filter 5 gallons through your set up and leave it for that long? It seems like that time might very on the beer, amount of hops etc.

    What's the best style...

Thanks for the suggestions all. It does drink like a big red so I will enter it as such.

    What's the best style...

for this beer? I am entering a beer in the NHC for my first time and I brewed a very popular Irish red ale that everyone seems to love. I now realize that beer is outside of BJCP style guidelines for an Irish ale and I wonder if it makes sense to enter this in another category. IBU's, SRM and...

anyone use a quick carb motor to filter?

Used it for the first time yesterday. The filter fits VERY tightly and I noticed some sections where the curve of the top and bottom notches on the filter housing cut into the rubber on the inside of the filter. I had been using throw away filters before and noticed a big difference in...

anyone use a quick carb motor to filter?

    The clarifier or Quick Carb?

anyone use a quick carb motor to filter?

I recently got a "clarifier" 1 micron filter and used it last night for the first time. Typically I use co2 to push from one keg to the other but that was taking a LONG time and using a decent amount of co2. I hooked up just the motor of a blichmann Quick Carb before the IN line on the filter...

    Bar Build Part 2: 8-tap Through-the-Wall Keezer

Interesting. Is that to keep pressure balanced for each keg? If you don't do that will you see higher pressures in existing kegs?

    Split Batch Question

If I added in a pound of Vienna, how much of the carapils / malto should I remove?

    Split Batch Question

Thanks for the feedback. I am not set on those hops necessarily just found them to be prevalent in the recipes I had. I am still behind the learning cure on mash ph. I have been doing batch sparging and using RO filtered water and was under the impression you really had to worry about ph when...

    Split Batch Question

Looking for some input and recipe help for doing a 10 gallon all grain batch that I am planning on splitting into 2 - 5 gal batches. I already have a lot of darker / heavier beers on tap and wanted to add in some lighter beers to round out the kegerator. I was thinking of doing a blonde or...

temp for conditioning and Nitro questions

:ban: Yes I definitely am. I found this adapter on AIH. http://www.homebrewing.org/CGA-320-x-580-Nitrogen-Regulator-to-CO2-Tank-Adapter_p_1424.html I have quite a few tanks - one of them was an Oxygen that was converted to co2. It's a steel tank. Perhaps that would handle the higher...

temp for conditioning and Nitro questions

I guess this is where I am confused. I thought after two weeks in a fermenter and I hit my final Gravity I cold crash to reduce sediment. I force carb over a several week period at serving temp to make sure the co2 is dissolved properly. I was under the impression that most yeast activity...

temp for conditioning and Nitro questions

Have two questions for anyone that can help. First has to do with temperature for conditioning beer for kegging. I had been transferring my beer from secondary to a corny and then placing into my keezer and waiting several weeks before drinking. I would cold crash coming out of the...

Side by Side 4 tap keezer and dual zone Fermentor build

The other thing that came to mind yesterday was if you could build a removable separating shelf on the fridge side you would likely be able to larger conical. I just got a 12.5 gallon from Stout and the measurements look like it would just fit in. I think the only issue would be getting a good...

Side by Side 4 tap keezer and dual zone Fermentor build

Thanks Nick. The set up works like a champ. I have used it constantly to serve and / or ferment and its still working at full capacity. There are two things I think I would change. One is to make the middle separation on the fridge side smaller - perhaps mount the controllers elsewhere. I...

    Cfc vs immersion chillers

So when I upgraded to all grain I went straight to a cfc, an exchillerator, vs my copper immersion chiller. I recently read an article where the author lamented his upgrade to just using a cfc and I realized I have some of the same issues he described. Those were: sanitation- using the immersion...

    cool new (non) pump sprayer

I am sure many of you are like me and have been using either a pump sprayer or traditional sprayer for sanitizing with star san. My sister is a hairdresser and on a recent trip to get my hair cut I noticed she had an amazing sprayer. It is relatively small, requires no pumping but performed...
