Two questions re: all-in-one systems like robobrew/digimash, etc

I never time it but I’d say about 15 minutes or less. For sure faster than the stock cooler.

    Robobrew/Brewzilla Discussion

I don’t use the pump during boil or while the wort is heating up, but I do use my whirlpool attachment at flameout, while the wort cools down - so a few minutes at or near boiling. I suppose using it while the wort is heating up is the same, but in reverse...

    Are yeast starters required?

First many years of brewing I used liquid yeast (aka) White Labs and I almost always did a starter. For whatever reason I’m not prepared to admit, I’ve always hated doing starters, so early this year I switched to dry yeast and now never do a starter. Since the yeast costs half as much I have no...

Two questions re: all-in-one systems like robobrew/digimash, etc

I have the Robobrew 3.0... Recirculation, no issues with oxidation. You can add a 3/8” silicon tube any length you like to avoid air, but I don’t see it as an issue. The main issue I and others have, depending on the malt bill, is poor recirculation flow through the tall/skinny malt pipe. I...

Imperial Stout Russian Imperial Stout (2011 HBT Competition Category Winner)

The ABV for that style starts at 8%. I suppose you could scale back the grain bill and give it a try, or you could find a different stout recipe - for instance I recently brewed an oatmeal stout and tapped it about 3 weeks after brewing. The risk with scaling the recipe is that not all grains...

    Robobrew/Brewzilla Discussion

My goal is always to minimize trub every step in the process so I don’t end up with a big pile in the fermenter. I always use a hop spider, actually have two sizes and the small one fits in the middle of my chiller if I want to keep hops while chilling. That said, I separate whirlpool and...

    Robobrew/Brewzilla Discussion

I always brew in the basement, year round, near the back door, and do my cleanup on the back porch. Agree on the hop basket, I hold mine over the kettle with a glove. Should be a pretty easy solution...

    Robobrew/Brewzilla Discussion

The display is hard to read, very narrow viewing angle. I put my 35L on a milk crate, which helps a little.

    Robobrew/Brewzilla Discussion

I’ve never brewed a Gose or even an Oktoberfest. Both are on my list however on my return I have a Belgian dark strong ale queued up that’ll probably get priority.

    Robobrew/Brewzilla Discussion

You Robobrewers have been silent for a couple weeks. I shut down my fermenters for an extended trip from NC to UT but have an imperial stout, barleywine, and rye IPA conditioning for my return :-) 18 Robobrew batches in the books so far this year and plans for at least three more when I return...

    Adding gypsum

Go for it! Ward labs for water tests.

    Adding gypsum

Its pretty common for brewers to add gypsum to IPAs without running a water profile analysis. I use BeerSmith and I have very neutral ground water (NC mountains), checked my go to pale ale recipe, calls for 9 grams gypsum - converts to roughly 2 tsps. I don’t see you’ll go wrong with that as a...

    Robobrew/Brewzilla Discussion

I’m not familiar with the Digiboil, but it looks essentially the same as the Robobrew/Brewzilla. I use Beersmith and with my profiles It always sets me up with a 1.7 grist ratio and I’ll go with 1.6 on bigger grain bills. My mashes aren’t thick like oatmeal and you also be aware the heating...

    Robobrew/Brewzilla Discussion

I’ve always fly sparged and never thought about an alternative. I read the Brulosophy review and it seems to me that batch sparging is extra work and time. What am I missing?

    Robobrew/Brewzilla Discussion

I’ve always managed the recirculation to avoid overflow and realized last session when the extension separated that I never use the overflow pipe and it just gets in the way.

    Robobrew/Brewzilla Discussion

I did a thermometer calibration today while I was flushing my Robobrew at 150 F - the Robobrew sensor was dead nuts same as my Thermapen, no offset. There could be a lot of variation from unit to unit though...
