American IPA Dogfish Head 60 Minute Clone (AG) & Extract

I'm actually in Ottawa as well! I don't suppose you'd care to part with 2 oz of simcoe? I'll pay you top dollar! Or I could trade. I've got an oz of citra or I could order another kind of hop you're interested in.

American IPA Dogfish Head 60 Minute Clone (AG) & Extract

Good to know! There are so many conflicting ideas floating around that it can be difficult to figure out what's right sometimes. Have you ever used anything in place of simcoe for this recipe?

Thanks for the tip. I would have ordered from them, but their Amarillo is out of stock and their prices are significantly higher than Ontario Beer Kegs.

Steeping Grains in a Second Pot, Adding Late in Main Boil

I've been thinking about steeping the grains in one pot while boiling the wort in my kettle. Curious if it makes a difference in flavour or hop utilization. It would be awesome (much more efficient) to cut out that extra 30 mins.

American IPA Dogfish Head 60 Minute Clone (AG) & Extract

I thought that the rule of thumb was to steep 1lb of specialty grains in 1 gallon of water. I've read threads that suggest that steeping in too much water will result in more tannins being released because of a higher pH level. Also, would it be okay to steep the grains in a separate pot...

American IPA Dogfish Head 60 Minute Clone (AG) & Extract

I've been reading this thread for the past two weeks now and it's just getting me more excited to brew the extract version on Sunday. Anyway, sorry if my newbie questions have already been addressed, but I've read through 138 pages so far, and it's taking up a lot of time. I know that there's...

    Whodini krausen! Disappeared, then re-appeared!

I think there was definitely some hop particles in there, but probably not too much. It was only a 2.5 gallon batch with 0.25 oz of hops (I know, barely any).

    Whodini krausen! Disappeared, then re-appeared!

Thanks for the advice. Next time I'll try to chill the wort a couple degrees below room temp and then pitch. If fermentation is lacking after a few days, I'll move the carboy out of the basement and upstairs where it's a few degrees warmer. Temp is pretty steady in the basement and main floor.

    Whodini krausen! Disappeared, then re-appeared!

Thanks for the info! For future reference, is it a good idea to agitate the fermenter if you think that your fermentation hasn't been vigorous enough? If I hadn't moved the carboy and unknowingly re-started the yeast, I would have assumed that the fermentation was finished before it had reached...

    Whodini krausen! Disappeared, then re-appeared!

Temperature has stayed the same since Sunday (before the new krausen formed), however, I did have to move the carboy over a couple feet on Sunday when I was doing some bottling. I tried to keep the agitation to a minimum, but it must have kick-started the yeast again. In hindsight, I'm guessing...

    Whodini krausen! Disappeared, then re-appeared!

*Posted this earlier today and only got one response, so I'm posting it here in the fermentation and yeast section. Hoping to get a little insight. Mods, feel free to delete this thread if it's not allowed to be in more than one place. Anybody have any experience with getting two different...

Two krausens from one batch?! WTH?!

It began bubbling about 1 bubble every 10 seconds at approximately 5-6 hours after I pitched. For the next two days it was bubbling once per second. It's currently bubbling about once every 2 or three seconds. Do you think it could take 3.5 days for the real krausen to show up with that kind of...

    Graff (Malty, slightly hopped cider)

My fermentation is going really weird. I got two krausens!! The first one was kind of weak and fell within two days after appearing, then two days later, another formed. It's a little thicker and much cleaner/creamier looking. Here's a thread I started about it (with...

Two krausens from one batch?! WTH?!

Anybody have any experience with getting two different krausens from the same batch? I’m still pretty new to brewing, but this seems a little odd to me. On Friday, I decided to brew a half batch (2.5 Gallons) of Graff (it’s a cider with malt and hops). I followed the recipe...

American Pale Ale Wild Dog Days of Summer Ale

I bottled this version of the recipe today and the flavour and aroma of the sample I took were awesome. Can't wait for it to carb!

    Graff (Malty, slightly hopped cider)

Hey folks, please excuse my questions that reek of complete noobie-ness, but I need a little help. I'm planning on cutting the original recipe in half (I have a 3 gallon carboy). I was just curious how you might suggest cutting back the alcohol content on this while still retaining the main...

    Final Gravity TOO LOW?!

I figured I'd give a little update. I took a gravity reading tonight and once again, it showed up as 1.008. However, I checked the calibration of the hydrometer and it was indeed off by about 0.004 (I could have sworn it was at 1.000 the last time I checked). Therefore, my final gravity IS...

I need a summer brew that IMPRESSES!!!

SD-SLIM posted a pretty simple recipe that a lot of people seem to be raving about. It's a Lemon-Lime Hefe Weizen that can be substituted with grapefruit if you prefer. It says that it's all grain, but he provides an extract version in his first post as well. I'm planning on brewing this one at...

    Final Gravity TOO LOW?!

Even though there are some differing opinions, I'm sure we can all play nice. We all have the same goals in mind.
