    Setup Improvement Ideas

    1. Buy a separate hop bag for each addition. 2. buy a strainer that fits the kettle, like this one. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006NWBG/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20

Move from extract to all-grain brewing

I as well have thought of moving from extract to all grain. Again for the cost savings. It seems that on average my LHBS sells all grain kits at about half the cost of the same beer in an extract kit. A pound of extract costs about $3 while the equivalent base malt costs about a buck...

Why bring the water to boil before adding extract

You don't have to boil the water. If you are using a hopped extract and don't have to extract the oils from the hops you can just heat the water enough to dissolve the extract easily. Get the whole mess warm enough to pasteurize, cool and ferment. It called no-boil brewing, and it works...

Should New Breweries Have A Dump Fund?

I think the time is here for a "dump fund". There are two local brewpups I have been to once and I won't go back. I wasn't into beer enough to identify what was wrong but I knew the beer wasn't worth the price tag so I left after one beer and haven't been back. I can choose from five other...

    The Frugal Brewer

You need to find a way to do away with the Keezer. For total frugality it helps to have a basement that holds at 64 degrees year round, like mine. You didn't mention "secondary fermentaion" requiring more equipment, so I assume you, like me do with only a single fermenter. I bottle straight...

    Extract brewing methods

Just want to point out that some of us don't have city water. For me I use spring or distilled, doesn't seem to matter much with an extract recipe because my softened water leaves a funky taste in the beer, heck it even makes brewed root beer taste a bit off.

    midwest supply price question

Do you really think a quality supplier would up their prices to cover their Black Friday deal and risk pissing off the entire hombrewing community?

Iron Horse Root Beer Clone or something close?

You'll want to try several extracts to find one you like. As you know they all taste like root beer just not all the awesome flavor you want. Maltodextrine is the key to that mouthfeel you want, I'm just not sure how much.

    Largest bottle size

Tap-a-draft, or the beer pig would be the biggest things I could think of that you could "bottle" condition in. When I used to host dinners often enough I would bottle in Champagne bottles since I wold be serving the whole thing with dinner in glasses. No that my beers pretty much just mine...

Need advice on drill for Corona mill

That would be overkill for what you want. It is cheap as you are likely to find though, and will certainly do the job.

    Cheap cordless drill destroying mill?

I'd buy a cheap corded drill. The cheaper the better as a keyed chuck can be cranked down even on the round shaft, though filing some flats wouldn't hurt, and keyed chucks are getting hard to find. Then you would have a dedicated drill just for your mill.

    Nightmare Bottling Session!

And thats why you have never broken one. If you break break one the othr will go in a second if you don't buy and keep a spare around.

60 min. full boil Malt Extract vs. late addition Malt Extract - What Say You?

Except that it isn't just the mash step that has been done. Extracts and hopped extracts are concentrated complete wort that has already been through the full boil, then processed for easy use. Heck, if you read the instructions on a cheap can kit they say to simply dissolve your...

    Educate me on Secondary...

To sum up" Yes, everything else is just quality and taste but especially with the bigger beers there is a whole lot of quality and taste you need to wait for or the beer is going to taste pretty bad.

    Groupon deal...

My Wife got me this for our anniversary. I'm thrilled that she gave me something brewing related at all. I figure I'll learn something. I've paid over $600 for a weekend seminar before in my other hobby and if I found two tips I could use right away and another couple that might come in...

Pasteurization methods to stabilize bottled fermented apple cider

In the dishwasher you are using the hot water to sanitize the exterior surface of whatever you put in there. For the stuff inside the bottle you would have the same problem as the oven method, uneven heating, and poor heat transfer.

    Beer Box

You can do either. Though I think you are stuck force carbonating with those little tiny capsules so it isn't very economical.
