Sight Glass in a Brew Keggle?

I've been thinking about this too. I'm probably going to just use a stainless rod or strip of metal with etchings on it... seems simpler. Allow the rod to rest in the keg the way you want to use it and then mark of the volumes.

    Advice on my planned sculpture

I'm still learning about all-grain brewing and equipment (reading Palmer's book, and online). I've sketched out my sculpture and wanted some comments on the overall design. I think it makes sense, but I see a lot of people doing tiered trees instead of the "stair step" design like mine...

    Uncorking and recorking carbonated bottles

FG was 1.030, 71B, with ABV of about 14% I think. I didn't stabilize that first batch, no. It was my first mead and the kit instructions said just bottle after 3 months in tertiary. I guess you may be right... I didn't think about residual CO2. Anyway I recorked as it was pretty easy.

    Uncorking and recorking carbonated bottles

Well, I just went down and did it. Was pretty easy with a bench uncorker and corker. All were mildly carbonated like clockwork. But I popped a bottle on the rest of my meads and none were carbonated so it appears to be an isolated incident. Long aging appears to be recommended...

    Uncorking and recorking carbonated bottles

I did my first mead about a year ago (it was an orange blossom kurt and Cathy's kit from northern brewer). I followed the instructions at the time and took gravity readings, etc., and it's now tasting pretty good in the bottles. One minor problem: it's supposed to be a sweet mead, and it...

    Blackberry mead

Yeah, I was thinking about adding some pectinase... should probably go get some of that. And these blackberries are ripe to eat... smaller and sweeter than the ones you get in the store for sure. I had some this summer from a store that were large and beautiful to look at but tasted like...

    Blackberry mead

Well, I was sort of following Schramm's advice when he says to heat fruit to 155F for 15 min in order to eliminate yeasts (I also sulfited). But I also picked them on the same day I used them, so I didn't have time to freeze them... thought cooking would help the break down. No boiling... just...

    Blackberry mead

My first blackberry mead in progress: (5 gal) -10 lbs. local CA blackberry honey (tastes great!) -12.5 pounds wild ripe blackberries in primary (3 hours to pick!) -Lalvin 1116 -10 lbs. blackberries in secondary (?) Starting gravity: 1.100 at 60F Added 1.5 gal water to bring upto 4.5...

    Why no commercial meads?

They're hard to find unless you've got a really special shop that imports or else find a local mead at a larger chain.

    Mead vs wine

Mead and wine use the same yeasts, and are more closely related to each other than either is to beer. So in that sense you could say they are both wines of sorts. Same procedures, same yeasts, etc. With wine you just have to know specifically about wine grapes. That's where knowledge of...

    Price Check On Honey

To the OP: Way too expensive. Do not buy. And always taste it before buying. For that price, it should taste like no other honey you've had before. I found some awesome blackberry honey the other day in Chico, CA... a little over $3 per pound and it was truly unique even in comparison...

    Sam Adams cherry wheat

The Sam Adam's cherry wheat isn't THAT bad... it's more artificial cherry than cough syrup, imo. Not a good example of a wheat beer... or a fruit beer really... but not "horrid".

What's with all the Sierra Nevada Pale hate?

I tried Life and Limb the other day in the bottle... was pretty disappointed. It has a definite alcohol taste and I could hardly finish half the bottle. I hope it's better on tap because I expected a lot better from Dogfish head and SN. It had potential, but was just overwhelmed by the...

What's with all the Sierra Nevada Pale hate?

I like SNPA okay. I think part of it is that it's everywhere. It was my introduction of sorts to craft beer, so I went through a phase of snubbing it because I was interested in more exotic things. SNPA also seems to have interesting aging properties. After a while it seems to get...

Calling all IPA lovers...what are your favorite 3?

I'm not a huge fan of IPA, but Sierra Nevada Torpedo is pretty good (not usually an overwhelming fan of SN either).

    Had my first Chimay

I probably like the Chimay red the best. Belgians are great. Orval, Abbaye des Rocs tripel, Westmalle dubbel, Gulden Draak... are some of my favs.

CLOG - Commercial brew LOG. - Log & Rate the beers you drink

Traquair House Ale (11oz) - Scotland - 9.5 This is one of my favorite beers. I'll give it a 9.5 just because I haven't tried it in a while. Definite prune flavor to this one. Smooth. Can find it at Bevmo for about $6 sometimes

Abbaye des rocs Triple Imperiale (on tap) - Belgium - 10 A most excellent, deep but mild, not too sweet, fruit/wine like dark Belgian... the kind that makes you want to drink nothing else all night. http://www.abbaye-des-rocs.com/page%20en%20anglais.htm

odd or original west coast breweries

I've not been to Lukas yet believe it or not. Jupiter and Triple Rock don't really cut it for me in terms of variety or style (although I did enjoy my last Jupiter dry stout). 21st Ammendment is cool but trendy and their beer is just ok imo (I do appreciate the originality of watermelon wheat...

odd or original west coast breweries

I do love the Trappist. I don't go there enough though! :) I like Anchor, but I haven't tried many of their more peripheral brews. From what I've heard, they do the basic steam beer best though. Do you mean the city beer store on Folsom street? I've been wanting to go there.
