Show us your sculpture or brew rig

Here is my brewstand. Great thing is that it completely comes apart for storage.... Ok but seriously, I love all of the stands on here. Maybe when I move to a bigger place with a garage, I can have my very own stand.

How to make a yeast starter - Pictorial

Thanks. I think Ill let it keep going on stir plate tonight, and wake up pretty early to put it in the fridge. Ill then let it warm up, then pitch. Thanks for the advice.

How to make a yeast starter - Pictorial

I have a question. I created a yeast starter a few minutes ago and it is on the stir plate now. I will be brewing on Saturday sometime so it will be in about 30 - 35 hours. I know that is a bit longer than the 18 - 24 hrs that people say, but this is the only time I will have to do it...

First AG batch, could use some suggestions

I use the CPVC manifold in a 48qt rectangular cooler and I couldn't be happier. A lot of people complain about stuck sparges with the use of wheat and rye, but I have done 10 or so brews with half rye or half wheat and have not have a problem. You can also build one for less than $10...

    Pond Pump

I don't start doing this until I get around 100 degrees. That water goes to cleaning. Then the water coming from the siphon goes to plants or I recirculate it.

    Pond Pump

Down in the south east have 75-80 degree tap water about 9 months out of the year. I know exactly what jawilson is talking about.

    Pond Pump

That is strange because I have never had a problem. I normally just run the IC with hose water until it gets to 100 degrees or so, then siphon from a cooler that has Ice water in it. I put the cooler on a milk crate, which puts the bottom of the cooler about a foot higher than the top of the...

    Pond Pump

One thing that is missed here is that you can siphon ice water through the IC and get the same effect as a pump. That what I do. Just make sure the IC is below the level of the ice water. Cheaper than a pump.

    Upsides to the Penrose Kettle!

I'm only using it for a boil kettle so I don't find a lid to be too necessary. When I'm cooling the wort, I just put a towel over it to keep anything out since I brew outside under oak trees.

    Contaminated Yeast ?!

After this post I don't know how to respond. Home-brewed ale will not taste like a light beer. Also, how can it be very clear but with chill haze? I think the beers may be fine, but you may not like home-brewed ales. Not sure what else to tell you.

How much to pay for a brew pot?

The Penrose is nothing fancy, but if you are doing all grain, with propane outside I think it is the best deal. It is too large for a stove top though. For the in between a 7.5 gal turkey fry pot can't be beat.

    Upsides to the Penrose Kettle!

I ordered the Penrose kettle on Monday and got it today. It looks awesome. 5 gallons looks so small in it, I might have to move to 10 gallon batches. Ha. I'll update how it works on Saturday. I'm excited.

I got my Penrose Kettle today and I ordered it on Monday. I can't wait to use it this weekend.

    Skeptical brew buddies

I just brewed a Rye IPA and it is delicious. Will be upping the rye next time to see what happens. It is strange for me to hear that any home brewers would be skeptical about any beer being brewed. I know I have seen weirder things than rye being done that have turned out great.

    Exploding Bottle 1 of 25

I had 2 bottle bombs on a few batches ago. It was because I didn't mix the sugar well and some were way over carbed and some were not at all. I hear sticking them in the fridge helps, or you can just put them in plastic bags and see what happens to them.

    Ahhh nothing like a homebrew

That cup is terrible. Roll Tide... EDIT: Ok so the more I look at it it looks like Green Bay and not Georgia Bulldogs. My Bad....

OG is Too High. Trying to figure out why & if I can "fix" it

Are you sure your hydrometer is measuring correctly? That seems way to high for the recipe you posted. It should have been around 1.055. Are you sure you added 6 lbs of DME? For that type of gravity it would have taken around 8 lbs of DME. Other than that, I have no idea why it would have...

    Cooling carboy during fermentation

I use a 100 or so quart cooler standing upright and swap out ice bottles. Keeps it at about 66 to 68 degrees.
