I like my beer flat. Is that weird?

I've never had cask ale. It sounds like this is simply bottle conditioned beer? The closest I have had to a beer in the UK was paying 10 pounds for a pint in Gordon Ramsay's stall at Heathrow. That was not a worthwhile purchase. I like some carbonation, but I too always find myself swirling...

    Botteling to commence soon

I gave it about 3 hours myself and had no probs.

I like my beer flat. Is that weird?

About 15 generations ago on one side and 3 on the other. So yah, I guess so!

I like my beer flat. Is that weird?

Exactly! More refreshing without all the bubbles too.

I like my beer flat. Is that weird?

Seriously, the samples I take for gravity readings are pretty darn good. I'm not really sure I want to carbonate them. Anyone else like me?

    Cheaper to buy or brew?

hmmm. Well I know beer in the US is cheaper than Canada... Up here it's $12-16 for 6 beer. 6 x 375ml = 2.25L. $12 / 2.25L = $5.33/L. I'm only on batch #2 of homebrew. But I got nearly 23L out of my batches. That's the equivalent of $122.67 worth of the cheaper store bought beer. I paid ~$35...

What a difference a week makes

Brewed my hefeweizen and after nearly 2.5 weeks in primary I tested the gravity and of course sampled it. Wooo it was... hot with alchohol flavour. Not horrible, but not super pleasant. Left it for a week in primary and tested gravity & tasted it again. Wow! Night and day difference. This...

    Why is this addicting?

hehe it is nutso! I'm just looking to build a fermentation chamber and then I'll be pushing out smaller 2.5g batches I think. We'll see!

    Im getting fat. lol

What makes vegetarianism tough is finding plant based protein sources. Of course, vegans are much more strict about it... If you eat eggs & cheese, etc. it's not quite as hard - ovo lacto vegetarian or whatever they want to call it. But I tried to absolutely forgo meat and meat derived...

    Im getting fat. lol

Vega is a vegan protein shake/meal replacement powder. The nutrition specs are pretty impressive, the taste is sorely lacking. It's not HORRIBLE but it's not even close to good, let alone ok tasting... Vegetarian is good stuff but I think some people tolerate it better than others. For me, I...

    Im getting fat. lol

Ahhh ok. I'm a fan of Pollan. But I can't eat/live like he does. I buy my meat from a ranch just a few hours away, grass fed, free range. I have a salmon csa share, do my best to eat only organic, free range chicken, etc. Get my veggies delivered to me by a local organic delivery service...

    Im getting fat. lol

hmmm while your argument has some merit for environmental purposes, from a health perspective I'm not convinced. 4 oz of a lean steak is around 200 cals with approx 25 grams protein and 10 grams fat. 4 oz of salmon is nearly the same as steak but more omega 3's... 4 oz of chicken breast...

    Im getting fat. lol

More real food, less processed garbage fake food. I don't think there is anything wrong with a good serving of protein and 3-4 cups of veggies at every meal. But 3-4 cups of pasta/rice/bread is not healthy.

    Im getting fat. lol

That's pretty significant. You may want to talk to your doctor... lot's of bad stuff can cause such weight gain. Always good to nip stuff in the bud early, if possible. My doctor was really concerned when I put on 20lbs in a year...

What's the next step in creating better beer?

Good point, it get's boiled anyways. I just did a full boil on the big pot to get some extra water for top up, etc. and used some of that for steeping. But boiling less water would be quicker. My gas range is pretty powerful, but boiling gallons of water takes a while. Thanks for pointing...

What's the next step in creating better beer?

So it sounds like I have it right in my mind - I need to improve two things: 1) Pitch the correct amount of yeast 2) Temp control during fermentation. Now to find some simple DIY walk thru's on building something to help control temps... Thanks!

What's the next step in creating better beer?

Hey Bosox, There are definitely a LOT of styles and beer to brew - so many it's rather confusing honestly :) I'm more concerned about how to my beer better and perhaps even be consistent about it. I know the ingredients are one thing, but I am reading (which is bad, wayyy too much info) and...

What's the next step in creating better beer?

So I'm on batch #2 (it's been in primary over two weeks now). Been contemplating #3 for a couple weeks. Before I jump on it, I want to know if there is something fairly simple I can do to create better beer. I'd prefer not to spend big bucks on gear so... Basically, I've done extract with...
