Spike vs. SS Brewtech vs. Blichman systems...

Just jumping in here: I own 2-20 Gallon kettles from Spike and they have been rock solid. I'm not a big fan of weldless fitting on any of my equipment which was my deciding factor to go with Spike. Welds are solid, clean and the kettles perform great. I had them weld 2" TC Ports on the sides of...

    Spike... I need a conical

I was one of the testers for their pre production units and I can confidently tell you....it's worth the wait and you won't be disappointed. The units are built really well. Every port is welded, the 4 inch TC at the top is great for dry hopping (without having to remove the conical lid), the...

How to clad a kettle in wood

I did this with a keg I had. I used plywood. At the top opening I cut a ring where it would fit over the keg and then a circular piece at the bottom. I used insulation safe glue to glue the plywood down and then nailed the strips of wood I cut down. See this...

Anyone use a chilled conical to bring wort to pitching temp?

just be aware that simply having a container of water in a fridge will not be efficient, it will take a while for the fridge to "re-chill" the warm water being returned using cold ambient air. you really need the coils of an A/C unit or the coils in the fridge (if you have glycol in the water)...

    Plasma Cutter in Calgary?

Use an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel for stainless, it's not that hard and plenty of "How To's" on this forum. I've made 4 of them and worked perfectly every time...

Motorized Grain Mills: Time to show them off!

The only way you could cause any type of "explosion" on a home brew level would be if the motor was confined in small enclosure where Grain particles/dust could accumulate and cause something like this, for example, locating the motor in small cabinet where the grain catch is and having a door...

Motorized Grain Mills: Time to show them off!

I've experienced the same issue with the image rotation. The only way I was able to correct it was to crop the image from top and bottom of the picture and it then uploaded correctly. I'm sure there is another easier way, but that was the only way I was able to correct it.

    Picnic vs Standard Metal Faucet

I use the same setup for bottle fills (old racking cane jammed into the spout though) and it works great. I did a little experiment, I bottled some beer I had into 4 bottles with the homemade bottle filler, left them in a fridge for about a year (totally forgot about them). When I opened them...

    Picnic vs Standard Metal Faucet

Just and FYI, the more times you open a keezer, the more moisture gets into the keezer especially during the summer time when humidity is high. If you use a picnic tap, you'll be opening that keezer each time you want to pour.

Sanitary weld? Gounds for an exchange?

I own two 20 gallon Spike kettles that I had customized, I ordered them both at the same time. Both came in pristine condition with perfect welds and I had 2 inch TC installed on both kettles for an electric element. Not sure how or why you got the kettle with that type of welding on it, but...

Mounting chugger pumps on the stand. High or Low?

Rotate the head, remove the 4 screws, do not pull the pump head off, just rotate the head to the position you want it in, line up the mounting holes and insert the screws again.

Mounting chugger pumps on the stand. High or Low?

I agree, you need a valve right off the drain port of the kettle. The way it is not, you won't be able to remove the pump from the kettle in the event it clogs or stops working. Also, you have the outlet of the pump attached to the drain port of the kettle? Are you going to pump into that...

    Mash Sample Chiller

Or, better yet, a freezer mug: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00772PGVC/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 Just freeze it a few hours prior and the ice that forms in between the sleeves will chill the same right down with some stirring. Just make sure the mug is plastic as the thermal shock from boiling...

Couldn't you just hook up the the handles on the keg?

Need Help Wiring A/C Unit for Glycol Chiller

You'll just need to jump the RY-COMP relay (connect pin 3 and 4 with a heavy gauge wire to bypass the relay). In fact if that relay has a feed wire going to it into Pin 3, move it over to pin 4 and you won't need to jump the relay, this way it also kills off the power to the blower motor as...

    Heating Element Enclosures

Never said it couldn't be replicated, just that the manufacturer thought of safety when designing /building it.

    Heating Element Enclosures

I have a Stilldragon housing as well. They are built to last and they have a safety feature most element housings do not have, they have a "weep" hole on the back of them. If you look at passedpawns first picture (with the wire) you'll see a slit in the plate the wire goes into, this points down...

The Big SS Upgrade with reviews

If you plan on fly sparging with the SS Brewtech manifold, you'll be very disappointed. I purchased it thinking I could and it did not work very well. Water was not coming out of any of the smaller holes and only 1 or two of the very large holes at the end of the manifold. If you'll recirculate...

Boil off rate, first kettle use

As someone else stated, if you want a lower boil off rate, lower the flame. My system is an all electric.
  20. dmcman73

Boil off rate, first kettle use

Boil off rate is affected by the size of the kettle, that's why boil off rates are different from brewer to brewer, there is no "standard" boil off rate. In any event, I have 20 gallon Spike kettles and my boil off rate is a little over 1.50 gallons per 60 min boil, so your 2.5 gallon @ 90 min...
